entering sheds

Post by hellihooks »

trying to get a few things from this year entered.... I actually have, (from over the years) quite a few readily identifiable sheds...
Image
enter them as though they were the actual herp and note shed in comments?... or do I even need to bother noting it?
Nice if we had a box for 'shed'... :? jim

I used to enter the obvious nerodia sheds. But it was always hard to tell which species it was. Some people made the controversial complaint, so I quit posting stuff without a species.

I would just enter it as the voucher.

The only problem with sheds is if you flip a shed skin under a piece of tin and then flip the next piece and find a freshly shed snake, is that n = 2 or n = 1?

That's what happened to me with this snake -

Put the shed back on the snake... see if it fits? Seriously though, outside of any other factors that may need to be considered...enter sheds as the herp they came off of?

QTY=1 and note possibly 2. Found freshly shed snake near the skin, and may or not be it's shed.

I would just enter 1 record with 2 pictures if I found the shed and the snake that cast it.

I enter sheds only in areas I don't have any other vouchers of the species at that particular location. Once a live or dead specimen is found at that location, I remove the shed entry.

I ONLY do this if I can ID the Shed beyond a resonable doubt.

See this entry for an example of this..

To be clear, by 'location' do you mean say specif outcrop, or just general area? We found this shed up by Grassy Hollow, after Josh's herp Ed talk, and not likely to return till next year... It's clearly a SD SAL... hell... you could even tell it was female.
Perhaps, like the DOR box to check, we should have a 'shed box'? jim
