NAHFA-Northeast takes part in MARA

Post by kyle loucks » February 7th, 2011, 4:53 pm

The Northeast Chapter of NAFHA has partnered with the Maryland Natural History Society with their ongoing Maryland Amphibian and Reptile Atlas (MARA) Project. The project, sponsored by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources is in it's second year of a five year project to document Maryland's 95 species of herps. Similar to their bird atlas project, MARA will be used to determine the status of the states herpetofauna. NAFHA Northeast is taking part as volunteers and county coordinators in the project. The Northeast's own Conservation Officer, spinifer, is both county coordinator and is leading a verification team that will confirm the data which is submitted by volunteers statewide. The Northeast Chapter members spring trip will be to southern Maryland and will target areas where data is lacking or where more species need to be verified. Other chapter members of the MARA team are Brian Goodman, coordinator for Harford County, Brian is assisted by members Scott McDaniel and Mark Zimmerman. Kyle Loucks is on the verification team and will be accompanied by other members as we volunteer time collecting data for the project. Chapter member spllogics' web talents (http://www.paherp.com) are being utilized to automate the data submission process and the verification program. .

So if you are passing through Maryland and plan to herp there, please see the webite or contact one of the Northeast Chapter Members on how you can help.
More information can be found at the Natural History Society of Maryland web page at http://www.marylandnature.org.
