OLDSMAR - Three Pinellas deputies worked together to capture a large alligator Monday morning, keeping it away from a crosswalk where kids were walking to a nearby elementary school.

Crossing Guard Denise Leone spotted the 7.5-foot gator lying against a wall between a subdivision and the sidewalk next to Forest Lakes Elementary school just before 7 a.m. She immediately called deputies, and they called a trapper when they arrived.

The trapper wasn't able to get to the area right away, and the alligator started moving toward the intersection where kids were crossing to get to school, according to the sheriff's office.

Working quickly, the three deputies were able to get a rope around the gator's neck and tail before the creature started to fight back.

One photo from the sheriff's office shows one of the deputies sitting atop the wall the gator was near and lowering the rope down.

Deputies say the gator started thrashing and rolling around, even smashing into the wall and causing pieces of stucco to fall off. Deputies Jeffrey Crandall, Michael Bard, and Richard Serra, Jr., were able to put handcuffs around its hind legs and tape over its mouth once it stopped rolling around.

Fish and Wildlife Officials came to take custody of the alligator until the trapper arrived.
