It's an interesting article, Chris, but apparently not very accurate. I recently visited China and was taken to a man-made cave where more than 100,000 Chinese Giant Salamanders (called Wa Wa Yu by the local people) were being raised for food. This cave extended for more than a mile and contained yearlings, sub-adults, and adults (most of the adults were around four feet in length and barely fit into their concrete enclosures). I met the owner of this facility and he explained that he had three such caves totaling some 400,000 salamanders and said that his enterprise is government sanctioned. He even provided a slick, color brochure (in Chinese) illustrating numerous recipes and prices of dishes that can be made from the salamanders. It was quite shocking and extremely disturbing.
