Anyone own a Nikon D600?

Post by chrish »

Apparently there have been some unusual problems with dust and oil from the shutter mechanism (?) contaminating images.

Nikon have agree to clean them for free - http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Service-And- ... amera.html - even if the warranty is over.

I just came across this little bit of news regarding the D600 earlier today, apparently China has banned the sale of them due to the problems.

There is no more of a dust problem with this camera than any other. The problem is oil or some sort of lubricant. The dust sticks to it. Mine started to have a problem at around 4500 shots. I let it go to about 7000. I wet cleaned the sensor and have not had a problem since. I got the camera refurbished for $1600.00, I paid $1800.00 for D300. The D600 blows the D300 away.

I imagine if I were some rich snob that did not know how to take care of problems on my own, I would have sent the camera back at 5000 shots or sooner. Nikon would have cleaned it and sent it back and at 5500 shots it would be dirty again. Growing up in the middle class I have a good deal of patience and a DIY attitude. If you are of that same mindset I highly recommend the D600. It looks like the problems occur from 4000-8000 shots. My D600 has ben perfect from 7000 to what I have now 15,000+.

It is a good camera, it just seems to have this one issue.

Nikon is apparently replacing the cameras now for those they can't clean satisfactorily - http://www.nikon.com/news/2014/0328_01.htm

Don't get me wrong Chris. Even though I love the camera I think Nikon should have acted MUCH quicker. I bought refurbished knowing that there would be a problem. I joke about the snobs, had I spent $2200 on it and it developed a oil issue I would have been furious too. In fact I am grateful that it happened, only way I could afford it.

One thing is certain, if you are patient, the problem will go away.

Nikon dropped the ball bigtime with the D600. I had mine and I was getting major oil spots 100 clicks into it...ended up returning it after bitching with Nikon. Cleaning the sensor won't help the issue, as the shutter mechanism will continue to leak oil.

I now have a D610 (D600 but with an upgraded shutter mechanism) and I love it.
