Herp-a-day (pt II)
Moderator: Scott Waters
Re: Herp-a-day (pt II)
Thanks! It's north of Point Conception. If I took the photo facing south rather than north, Point Conception and Jalama Beach would have been visible in the background. Access is restricted so the lizard is safe
Re: Herp-a-day (pt II)
Thanks for satisfying my curiousity. Shoulda known it was north of Jalama, those are definitely tracks, not highway, that and the lack of structures (as on the ranch) should have given it away. I really enjoy your photography.

A jungle carpet python (Morelia spilota cheynei) found last week. I recently bought a wide angle lens and have been trying it out with different things.

I am new to photography, but not to herping.
I recently found FHF, I'm loving it and learning a lot.
Hope to put it to practice soon with my new camera.
I do have a few photos of my odd trips as the rule
"photos or it didn't happen" always apply.
Here is probably my best shot taken on a 2.1mp Casio P&S in 2004
Giant Bromeliad Frog.

Wow it's so hard to choose. I'll just pick a random shot from one of the thousands over this previous summer in Honduras.

Glad to see you're back. Well, let's get it going again. I'll start with this: Southern Pacific rattler I found early last Saturday morning on a hike. It was the only thing I found.

Awesome, Rob.
The sheer variability within just about any given species is one of the reason I love crotes. I forgot I posted a different scute before, but the one I put up on Page 1 is an Antelope valley animal.

Glad to see this returned. Nothing exciting, but here's an unposted hatchling Glossy Snake Kevin and I found somewhere before the Police rolled us up for being hoodlums with our flashlights and cameras out. 2 sketchy nerds out in the desert doing nothing but trouble...

Here's one from the spring. I found these guys while walking a flooded area during a massive amphib chorus consisting of Dwarf American toads, Green frogs, American bullfrogs, Southern leopard frogs, Blanchard's cricket frogs, Green treefrogs, Cope's grey treefrogs, Eastern narrowmouthed toads, and Spring peepers in Scott County, Arkansas.
Neonate Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma - Western cottonmouths. You can still see the yellow tail tips that they will use for caudal luring.

Either you had a large "tele'" or, you can whisper to Leopard Lizards. They never let me get closer than my 10 foot fly rod.

Re: Herp-a-day (pt II)
That's an interesting observation. Maybe we are just lucky, but "all" of the Leopard Lizards we have found and photographed (only about 6-7, actually) allowed us to approach within just a few feet. Nicholas took the above shot from less than 2 feet away.Either you had a large "tele'" or, you can whisper to Leopard Lizards. They never let me get closer than my 10 foot fly rod.
Here's another one of the same lizard, also taken from about 2 feet, if that:
And after taking pictures, Nicholas caught the lizard with his bare hands. She never really moved:
Maybe, it's different for male Leopard Lizards, at least fully grown ones. All of the others we have found were juvies or subadults.

Desert Iguana (Dipsosaurus dorsalis dorsalis)
Taken from about 30 feet away with an incredibly bulky 8oomm lens that I had borrowed. I think minimum focus distance was about 21 feet with that thing.

I like how the natural light is so even here and 'think it actually compliments the animal. I tried some with flash, even at -2 it washed it out.
