Nikon D80 macro lens advice?

Post by Ridge Walker » June 19th, 2010, 11:30 am

I've been using a Nikon D80 with a Nikkor 18-55 mm lens for about a year and a half now, and am fairly happy with how my photos turn out. I'm now looking into getting a good macro lens that I can use to get nice sharp close ups. I've been checking out the Nikon 105mm and the Sigma 105mm. Any pros or cons you can give about these lenses? Any other lenses you might reccomend? Most of what I shoot are reptiles, but I would like to do a little bug photography as well. Any advice would be most appreciated. :D

I can vouch for the Nikon. Fantastic lense overall. It stops pretty slow and the images are tack sharp. Highly recommended. Can get kind of heavy though if you're just carrying it around your neck.

I'd get the Nikkor 105, or Tamron 90mm(What I own) over the Sigma. For ME at least 105 mm on a DX sensor is toooo long, heck I still like my 90mm over a 105 on my FX sensor.

Cheers,
Chad

I have had the tamron 90mm for about three years and love it. Amazing quality for the price.

I shot the Tamron 90 on both and XTi and 40D when I shot Canon and I was in love with it. I haven't shot it since I switched to Nikon though... It's still my favorite macro though.

However, I have done a lot of shooting with the Nikkor 105, both VR and non VR versions. I really didn't like it at first, but it has grown on me a little bit and it is a great lens. Once I get a new camera though, I will be buying the Tamron over the Nikkor.

I don't think this helps very much. haha
