So I've had my 55 gallon aquarium running great for about 3 days, and suddenly the filter starts making horrible rattling noises. I shut it off an return the only inhabitant, a goldfish, back to the pond in our yard that it came from. I planned to take part the pump ASAP, but other plans got in the way. 2 day later, the thing is INFESTED with drain flies. How do you get rid of these? I plan on draining the tank, and putting all parts out in the sun to dry off and kill any living larvae or eggs. Should I use any chemicals? I am very inexperienced with aquariums, by the way.
I have a 55 gallon oceanic aquarium, with a magnum 350 canister filter, plus the bio wheel thingies.

you shouldn't need to use any chemicals, if you dry everything out, it should stop the flies. Just make sure they weren't coming from something else nearby, like maybe a potted plant or something, because they can re-infest, but as far the aquarium goes, just dry it out and it should be fine.

Thanks, I wasn't sure I they could remain dormant if the eggs dried out. I just helped my dad cut out a leaky cast iron sewer pipe in my sister's bathroom, which is most likely where they were from. It's all replaced, so I doubt there are any left other than the ones in my tank.

Very good advice. Dry heat is the single most effective disinfectant there is even for bacteria. Unlike chemical disinfectants nothing can effectively adapt to survive consistently dry heat.herpseeker1978 wrote:you shouldn't need to use any chemicals, if you dry everything out, it should stop the flies. Thanks, It's been drained for weeks now, and I haven't seen any more flies. I just haven't had the time to troubleshoot the pump, so it'll be a while until it gets back up and running.

I don't know, if it's help or not but try to use Invade Hot Spot Bio Foam, i read about it on the https://stoppestinfo.com/90-best-ways-t ... flies.html and he have a good raiting on the amazon. So try to use it. Or check something else on the amazon.
