Four of a kind...** - UP AND RUNNING AGAIN March 2016!

Post by chrish »

OK, so Alphabirding has been fun and is going strong, but it made me think of something else that might be fun.

Let's see if we can get four people to post birds that have the same starting name. After we get the fourth example, that fourth person will then start the next group.

So if the starting person posts:

Common Mynah
the second person posts Common Tern
the third person posts Common Ground-Dove
the fourth person posts Common Coucal

then the fourth person will follow that up with a new group, such as Northern Cardinal. Then three other people will follow with "Northern" birds.

Let's have a few rules:

1. Don't follow your own photo. You can be person 1 and 3, but not 1 and 2.
2. Please think before you start the next group. Even if you have a great Resplendent Quetzal shot, it might be kind of a short game that way  . Make sure there are at least 3 other reasonably likely candidates.
3. Wild birds only (unless we get stuck for 48 hours).
4. Please post only your photos. They don't have to be great photos, just show the species in question.
5. Names should be correct AOU, BOU, Clements etc. names (or appropriate naming authority in that country). No Pigeon Hawks or other old or colloquial names.
6. Hyphenated names are OK, so you could follow Orange Oriole with Orange-crowned Warbler. But it must be the first part of the name, i.e. you could not use Orange-crowned Warbler after Crowned Crane.

Have fun damnit!

Sorry, just happened to pop into my mind at the time. I'll get us a little closer to moving on so we can do Northern or Western or Violaceous next.

Eastern Kingbird

Anyone have an Eastern Towhee, Whip-poor-will, Meadowlark, Plaintain-eater, Bristlebird, Mountain Greenbul, etc., etc, to close out this group?

OK, we'll round this out with

Common Poorwill (an actual bird photo taken while herping!), Culberson County, TX

And now, for our next word, let's try Golden. Remember you can use it in a hyphenated or non-hyphenated name as long as it is the first word.

So I'll start with Golden-cheeked Warbler

I fold.

I'm guessing we will have to call ChrisH in to referee this one. I checked the ABA 2011 checklist and the SPSK is the only one whose name begins with "South." Unless we have enough photographers who have traveled internationally, I'm betting we can't find pictures of four species that start with "South" or even "Southern."

I think we'll pull this one off, remember, half the world is in the south. We've already seen a Southern Lapwing on the other post. I have a couple of others as well.

By the way, what time of year was that bird taken? I'm thinking of making a New Zealand pilgrimage.

March. We went down to Stewart Island. We missed Kiwis on the island where they are supposed to be easier to see so we went on a guided Kiwi watching trip at night. They come out to feed on the beaches there. We saw 4 of them. I had to take the photo by dim flashlight at ISO 6400 and it was still blurry. The guide got annoyed at me because my camera shutter made noise and we were supposed to be completely silent.

Let me know if you are headed to NZ. I can give you some "must see" birding spots/trips.
