Here's what we've used so far:
American
-bellied
-billed (twice...oops)
Black
Blue
-breasted
Brown
Buff(y)
California
Cassin's
-colored
Common
-crested
-crowned
Eared
Eastern
Eurasian
European
-eyed
Golden
Great
Greater
Green
-headed
Least
Lesser
Little
Long
Masked
Northern
Olive
Red
Ruddy
-rumped
Short
Snowy
South
-tailed
-throated
Tree
-vented
Western
White
Wilson's
-winged
Wood
Yellow
So our next word will be
-faced. There are lots of these, even a few from the US.
I'll start with one from this year, White-faced Storm-Petrel from the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand (pelagic trip report coming soon!)

Chris,
You seem to have captured another bird in your White-faced Storm-Petrel photo. Horned Owl in the reflection?

That's pretty funny. I hadn't seen that. Range extension for sure as well as the first pelagic GHOW record probably.

I have a few other "faced" birds, but I don't want to go 4th because I would have to come up with the next word.
I was thinking "Vermiculated" would be good.

Keeping with the pelagic theme here, here's a slightly non-standard view of a Flesh-
footed Shearwater diving down to get a piece of fish we had thrown in to attract it.

OK, I think we can declare footed a lost cause. I have a lousy photo of a Blue-footed Booby somewhere, but I can't find it.
Here's a blatantly stolen photo of a Yellow-footed Pigeon from the internet -
Let's try something that is hopefully easier,
- backed
I'll start with a horrible photo of a Dark-
backed Wood-Quail from Ecuador. This was shot in a very dark cloud forest in the pouring rain, but it was a lifer.

OK, I'll finish off -necked with an easy one,
Ring-

and next we'll move on to a bird with the name of
a US state in its name, but NOT California, which we have already done.
I'll get us started with
Tennessee Warbler

Uhhh....this challenge was a bird with the name of a US state in its name, but NOT California.
Unless we've recently voted to incorporate a state named "Kittiwake" as the 51st state?

Gray

I think I have a lousy photo of a Swainson's Warbler, but I can't find it.
So I'll go with
Swainson's Thrush (Port Aransas, TX):
or just in case I'm wrong with that ID.... (see below), here's another one from Ecuador.
The only ones left are the Warbler, the Flycatcher and the Sparrow.

I had the Hawk as well, I was hoping someone had the Warbler. The Sparrow is also common in most cities in Ethiopia. I've never even seen any of the remaining ones.

Chris, this is a very sincere query. Swainson's in the west are have a warm buffy wash in the upper breast, lores. That bird looks so cold gray all over. I would think maybe more Gray-cheeked or even dare I say, Bicknell's
...but maybe that's the way Swainson's are there. I am definitely no expert on Catharus and welcome correction.

That's a great point. I'm wondering if the overcast light may be confusing the issue, but it does look like GCTH in the photo. That isn't a mistake I am likely to have made in the field since 90% of the Catharus thrushes we get here in migration are SWTH and GCTH is a good find. Bicknell's woujld be a state record I think.
I'll have to do a little more research into when I took the photo.
I would love to have a photo of a GCTH since Swainson's are a dime a dozen down here in migration and I have quite a few photos of them.
I have put in a "better" SWTH photo just in case. Now where's your Swainson's Sparrow photo?

...uh, hmmm, uh, well ...
These are fun threads with so many great pics ...I don't have that many digitized by oughta try to chip in where I can. Never got a decent Swainson's Thrush though but do have some very nice hermits ...hopefully I've scanned those way back.

Hmmmm...Hermit might be an interesting one to try. The problem will be that after Hermit Thrush and Hermit Warbler, it will come to a screeching halt while we try to find someone with a series of the "Hermit" Hummingbirds.

Another acceptableish option at this point would be a Chestnut-mandibled Toucan. One of its former alternate names was Swainson's Toucan, and until the recent lump with Black Mandibled Toucan, it was Ramphastos swainsonii. I have a very poor photo, I'll post it tomorrow if no one comes up with anything else.
EDIT I guess we were writing at the same time. We can go with the new category. I have nothing for it.

I have a great photo of a Black-mandibled Toucan, but I think only the northern subspecies is the
swainsonii subspecies, so my photo from Panama wouldn't work.
I did, however, find out that the scientific name of this bird, the Pearl Kite, is actually
Gampsonyx swainsonii, so this will work at least at the specfic epithet level.

Excellent idea. Let's see if we can do it without resorting to birds with the word "and" between the color names.
Interestingly, we could almost do just Blue-gray since there are four species of blue-gray birds in the world.
One you posted, another one that rarely gets into the US but is widespread in the neotropics, this species from around the Pacific Ocean
Blue-gray Noddy -
Unfortunately, the fourth species, the Blue-gray Robin, is restricted to New Guinea so we probably aren't going to get a photo of that one.
I hereby volunteer to go get a photo if we need one if you guys will raise the funds.

I watched the 'Swainsons' set without a thought to Ramphastos swainsonii. Full credit to Curtis for coming up with that one and it would be great to see his Toucan photo. In the meantime maybe I could post my own effort. It is a silhouette of a Chestnut mandibled/Swainsons Toucan calling from the top of a tall tree in Costa Rica. I like the way the image turned out so any excuse...
Chestnut-mandibled Toucan (Ramphastos swainsonii)
For the two colour set another Blue-Grey.

I don't think we are going to get the other Blue-gray, so how about a lousy photo of

and our next challenge will be "
-capped"
White-capped Albatross (Stuart Island, New Zealand)
