I think this is a red tailed hawk

First is definitely a redtail, second looks like a nice chocolate colored redtail. Beautiful bird!

I agree with Pete on ID, in flight photo is text book in showing dark leading edge on wings. Excellent photos. The nest is a rare one, would you share what general area you saw that? Looks like canyon lands or Utah, but could be many places.

Redtails are highly variable in color. With extremes of light and dark. See a good book and get familiar with them, as you will see many phases when viewing and it helps distinguish from other Buteo hawks.

Thanks Vic. It was in Southern Utah. Any recommendations on a good book for raptor IDs? I have always had a little interest in them, but I guess my interest has started increasing recently. I have actually started paying more attention to them and wanting to ID them.
