Some birds in the Sundarbans

Post by jonathan »

Chrish asked me to post my Bangladesh bird photos here. Unfortunately, I took hardly any bird photos when I was in Lawachara National Park (just a birdeater, a parakeet, and a crested serpent eagle). I saw an awesome enormous Brown Fish Owl at night that I didn't even try to photograph (sitting perfectly in a rice paddy, but just too far away for a night shot), and I saw my lifer jungle fowl, but otherwise I didn't see too much. Too focused staring into bushes for herps.

But while I was in the Sundarbans I had a lot more time to look into the trees and sky, and saw some cool stuff, especially as far as kingfishers and birds of prey go. I'm not great at photographing birds, but here's a few pictures that I got. Definitely would appreciate ID corrections.

Jungle Fowl

Black-hooded Oriole

Orange-breasted Green Pigeon

Collared Kingfisher

Brown-winged Kingfisher - lifer

Crested Serpent Eagle - these seem to be very common in South Asia in my experience

Other bird species seen in the Sundarbans included Buffy Fish Owl, White-bellied Sea Eagle, and Ruddy Kingfisher. (all lifers for me - DOH! on not getting photos)

I should add - pretty much all the species photographed (except the jungle fowl) were seen repeatedly.

Here are those few Lawachara pics:

Crested Serpent Eagle

Red-breasted Parakeet

Chestnut-headed Bee-eater

And a raptor at the airport

In Lawachara we also saw Forest Spotted Owl, Collared Scopes Owl, and Brown Fish Owl at night, and lots of stuff we didn't ID. The highways had LOTS of Brahminy Kites perched on various things, Indian Pond Herons and Egrets in the water, some sort of vultures that I couldn't ID, and Black Drongos everywhere.
