Really nice! How the heck do you get a moving bird, and get them in focus? I aim at a flying bird and I get blue sky or white clouds or grey clouds...

Thanks for sharing annd for identifying the subjects.

Thanks Jeroen.

I struggled with this for a while too. And then I learned of AI Servo on my Canon. It continually updates what to focus on based on what is in the cross hares of you viewfinder when you have your shutter button half depressed. On the non-servo setting, you can half press the button, it will focus, and then hold that focus for a second or two until you take the picture. With AI Servo on, it just keeps going, tracking the focus of the subject with you as you pan along. I also switch from single shot to multiple, burst mode.

So now when I see a bird, I bring it into frame, half press to get the right focus, and fire away as I track along with it. Usually there is a keeper in there, but not always. If I am not very good at tracking, it will focus on the background and I get a series of blurry bird pictures.

I am not certain, but maybe your common tern is a Caspian?
Great pix!

My guidebook doesn't show the Caspian as having a reduced black cap for the winter/non-breeding coloration. But you're right in that common terns have a black bill in winter, which my bird does not.

The one bird that has a red bill and reduced cap is the Royal tern, and they're a bit smaller than Caspians. My book says Caspians are bigger than even ring-billed gulls, and this was a big bird, but I wouldn't say that big. Certainly smaller than the Herring Gull.

Lastly, there were plenty of Royals around, so I think it was another one of those.

Thank you for the photography help. I'll have to dig out the owner's manual and see what I can find. I know that in some settings it seems to track what I've focused on... . Sorry it took so long to respond, to. Thank you for your help. Beth
