How the heck do you get a moving bird, and get them in focus?
I struggled with this for a while too. And then I learned of AI Servo on my Canon. It continually updates what to focus on based on what is in the cross hares of you viewfinder when you have your shutter button half depressed. On the non-servo setting, you can half press the button, it will focus, and then hold that focus for a second or two until you take the picture. With AI Servo on, it just keeps going, tracking the focus of the subject with you as you pan along. I also switch from single shot to multiple, burst mode.
So now when I see a bird, I bring it into frame, half press to get the right focus, and fire away as I track along with it. Usually there is a keeper in there, but not always. If I am not very good at tracking, it will focus on the background and I get a series of blurry bird pictures.
