One afternoon, 4 loon species

Post by pete »

Took the afternoon off and went to chase a yellow billed loon being seen in Provincetown ma. Was fortunate to see the yellow billed as well as common, red throated and pacific loons. The yellow billed was a lifer! Had a few alcids and a finback whale as well. I will post a few pics this weekend.

What? No Arctic? ;)

That is cool. I like trying to see "groups" like that in one day if possible.

I have rarely done it except you can get all the regular North American Ardeids in the spring on the coast of Texas. I know some folks who got 4 kingfisher species in Texas in one morning.

A few years ago when a Yellow-billed Loon showed up off the coast of Texas, I actually thought about trying this but it would have involved a LOT of driving. At the same time all seven US grebe species were possible in the same trip. It was tempting but I thought that knowing my luck chasing birds I would end up with all but one of each.
