Nice pics, but I think your Merlin is a Great-horned Owl. Looks like the bird bug has bitten you too...
Re: Bird Photography 2016
What are you trying to say Brian... that I'm so bad at IDing these things I don't know the difference between a falcon and an owl LmfaoBrian Hubbs wrote:Nice pics, but I think your Merlin is a Great-horned Owl. Looks like the bird bug has bitten you too...
His name is Merlin. He resides at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center where I gifted the Melanistic Valley Garter to a caretaker who volunteer's there. So, I think you mean, "your Great Horned Owl is a Merlin"
Yes the birds definitely caught more of my attention this year. I had to make effort to put that aside and force myself to search for herps lol Birds are fun and way more challenging to photograph
Re: Bird Photography 2016
Hey, is Zach out there anywhere... somebody tell him that shot of the quail reminds me of the pic he posted screaming into the microphone with the hicky on his neck I think of that everytime I look at it Lol

Re: Bird Photography 2016
Well, you should have said the bird's name was Merlin...geez, what am I? a mind reader... Oh, and check my flickr photostream later tonite to see my bestest pic of a Verdin yet...
Re: Bird Photography 2016
Well, I thought not writing anything at all would be a good strategy to post one final FHF photography post to this forum without any misinterpretation of the combination of words chosen to describe and enrich the visual experience (and relieve me of the hours it might take to do so Lol)... and here you are, insisting on reading anything available to read within the giant black box full of visual images. Reading the damn BBcodes printed beneath the photosBrian Hubbs wrote:Well, you should have said the bird's name was Merlin...geez, what am I? a mind reader... That's close to the equivalent of me posting a kingsnake and writing, "checkout this Speck!" Then, you be telling me, "that's not a rattlesnake, Porter" jk
(Thanks, btw! I didn't mention that before/above. I'm more proud of my bird photography than my herp photog this year. Was NOT easy to get that super close to those birds to accomplish those shots. A lot of trust vibing going on and extreme amount of patience)
That is a nice Verdin pic! The arrangement of branches and the degree of fade in the background makes for a very pleasing visual experience I'd post the pic here for reference, but some jerk won't allow people to copy and paste his BBcodes
perfect balance of shapes as well

Pictures are worth 1000 words... however, only the source of their creation can give them valueBrian Hubbs wrote:Hmmm...I don't allow sharing huh? That must be because I don't want people stealing my pics...Oh well...here it is...my Bestest Verdin pic ever...

Re: Bird Photography 2016
People steal pics all the time and put them on websites and do other stuff with them. I don't put watermarks on my pics, but I try to lock them up...
Re: Bird Photography 2016
I know. I saw my olive and blue bellied aberrant Sierra garter on some website one time Lol I went to the Sacramento reptile show and saw one of my first treefrog photos being sold (without me knowing) by Chad Lane and Natalie's booth I totally wanted to buy it Lol What could be cooler than buying your own photo that was pirated off the internet and made into a print with no credit to the photographer. That's like the greatest story of all time They probably woulda let me have it if I asked for it, but it only would have been cool if I would have bought it.Brian Hubbs wrote:People steal pics all the time and put them on websites and do other stuff with them. When I wrote, "I'd post the pic here for reference, but some jerk won't allow people to copy and paste his BBcodes" it was in reference to something you said on a 2015 post (not sure if you remember or not) I drew that cartoon of you selling your books to the Native Indians on the reservation, to ease over the tension that post subject was getting. I think someone suggested to you that you should add the cartoon as your facebook profile pic or something and you responded, "I would, but some jerk won't allow his photos to be downloaded." I opened my download option availability after that So, that was just a spin off of that convo I remembered
The watermark thing is ridiculous I think. You have to save two copies of the photo...one watermarked, one sellable. I do the watermark thing because it looks cool to have my little ensatina on there and makes me look professional. I think it's the coolest signature of all time. Ties the photos to the cause. It was fun to color coordinate and hide them in places they were hard to find in some photos (like a wheres waldo thing. See if you can find the ensatina in the 2nd egret under the bridge pic) and the watermark helps to counterbalance empty negative space when needed. I don't have backup copies of the watermarked pics. So, they will always look that way. It's more of a artistic add on and a reminder of my field herping experience and what I was about. All just artistic expression and creation. The only thing I ever really wanted to accomplish out of it was finding a cool weird nature enthused girlfriend. However I did get 6 photos included in an Apple IPhone app and one of my greatest rare gartersnake finds in a field guide by the coolest author I know So, that was pretty cool Donating my pics to a couple of elementary schools was also a high point for me
Re: Bird Photography 2016
This was the photo But, they should have sold the one below it that I took with the flash. It's way better. Chad offered a free aberrant black-bellied kingsnake to me that day but I couldn't accept it.

Re: Bird Photography 2016
Chad stole your photo and was selling prints at a show? OFF with his HEAD...!
Re: Bird Photography 2016
Not exactly, but that is the funniest thing I've heard in awhile. From several aspects I honestly don't remember the story how it got there... one of their other clan members did it. I just mention their names because they were the people I recognized (along with Chads wife Danielle ) and went up and talked to.Brian Hubbs wrote:Chad stole your photo and was selling prints at a show? Wow, that one guy is building a database for Venomous Reptiles of the WORD! Very cool. I've never heard of a database like that... WORD!...
Re: Bird Photography 2016
The bird is the word?
Re: Bird Photography 2016
Brian, stop going around correcting everyone's mistyped writing etiquette! Here's one last bird shot from this year. Three shots of a Mallard flying away; combined together into one. Thanks for including my RED gigas in your bookBrian Hubbs wrote:Wow, that one guy is building a database for Venomous Reptiles of the WORD! Very cool. I've never heard of a database like that...
