Herping in Taiwan - The Book - PRICING POLL, PLEASE HELP!
Hi all,
as I mentioned over in that other thread, my book about my herping adventures in Taiwan is done, and I'm currently discussing details with a publisher. It will be print-on-demand, and I need your input to decide on the format:
OPTION 1: 200-page, 6 x 9 black & white text with no photos, retail price USD14.95. If you want photos, we'll publish those in a 60-page glossy booklet for an additional USD14.95.
OPTION 2: 300-page, 5.5 x 8.5 full color, glossy pages, the same amount of photos, but integrated in the text. That would retail at USD40.00.
I'm not in it for the money - this project is all about my love for writing, about giving something back to the herping community, and about having something with my name on it on my bookshelf (sorry, midlife crisis). So I would obviously favor Option 2. But I don't know if that'd be fair to you, the people who want to read it.
Please let me know if you'd be willing to fork out 40 bucks for a high-quality, glossy version, or rather save money and do with a text-only book with an additional photo supplement for additional costs.
Thanks!
Hans

I'm a part-time community college English teacher, but I'd shell out for option 2.

Option 2, hands down Hans!
Re: Herping in Taiwan - The Book - PRICING POLL, PLEASE HELP
Option 2, no hesitation...and now days, that is a reasonable price. Good luck, Vic
Re: Herping in Taiwan - The Book - PRICING POLL, PLEASE HELP
Make it the best book you can and people will be happy to pay the extra $$$.
People are lazy readers these days, so make sure there are lots of pics.

Another vote for option 2, most definitely! I really think that most people would rather have an "integrated" version, text and photos in one.

When I do eventually get my hands on it I'll want option two! Good luck. I am watching from the sidelines, as I plan to do a book as well. You could also try publishing it in E-book form.

Audio book? <- Seriously, this is how I 'read' most things these days!
Option 2 seems to make the most sense for print on demand.

Hi fellers,
good news and bad news:
Good news: the book will have about 350 pages, at the same price.
Bad news: we can't make the color pix glossy, they'll have to be matte. Otherwise the price might double.
Hope that's still OK....
Thanks again for all your support!
Hans

For what it's worth, I think matte will be fine. Back when I was editing a print-on-demand literary magazine, we decided to run the artwork in matte for the same reason, price, and were quite pleased with the results.
Looking forward to the book!

Matte is much better than glossy, in my opinion: plus it lasts longer. I've never developed my pics in glossy.Hans Breuer (twoton) wrote:Hi fellers,
