Where?

It wouldn't surprise me. There are all kinds of things that are invasive here, some aren't even listed.

It's not surprising but I'm interested in where, and if they really have been successfully established (reproducing in sustainable quantities).

Are these common in the pet trade in California? I havn't even heard of them and wonder how'd they be introduced; especially enough to create a valid population?

I don't know if they are common in the pet trade but they are clearly established in Hawaii so it is a species that has been successfully established elsewhere.

Oh, and pet trade isn't the only possible source of introduction.
It's possible tadpoles or even eggs came in from Japan with aquatic plants for fish for someone setting up a backyard pond.

ah, that makes a lot more sense. While invasives arn't a good thing, it sure does add a different perspective to herping; you truely never know what you're going to come across!

indicates accidental introduction with fishery products as a source for their introduction in other places.

I'm about to start looking at some vertebrate museums for evidence of where they might be in California. I'm curious.

EDIT -

Nothing found in MVZ under Glandirana rugosa or Rana rugosa. Latter they had for Hawaii.
Mothing found in CAS for CA or HI for either.

I didn't find anything at herpnet2 but their search is broken. Searching w/o specified location brings up bunch or results for Japan and pages more, too many to look through. Specifying a country, even Japan, brings no results. They need to fix their code.

An e-mail I sent asking where the species had been introduced in CA resulted in reply that the page appears to be in error.
