China 2012 photo teaser

China 2012 teaser

So things worked out this year that let me return to China. I came over in late May, and won’t return to the states until October 1st essentially. Lots of great things, lots of stories, too much to do for the time being of course, so I thought I’d throw out some highlights (pictures) with essentially no narrative at this point. All of that will come way later on as it typically takes me awhile. Anyway, here are some of the cooler finds (one in particular – it shouldn’t be hard to figure out – was a lifelong dream come true):

Sinomicrurus kelloggii

Sinomicrurus macclellandi

Azemiops feae

Ophiophagus hannah

Python molurus bivittatus

Goniurosaurus hainanensis

Boiga multomaculata

Tylototriton hainanensis

Paramesotriton hongkongensis

Amolops hainanensis

Haplopelma hainanum

Well that’s it for the little photo introduction. Plenty of other species (I’m at 85 right now) to come later on. Hopefully Taiwan, another trip to HK, and a trip to Thailand produce many more!

Awesome post!
Love the format: pictures and names. Pure field herping.
Makes me want to go back to Hong Kong right now and find a king.

The king is awesome! How was the pucker factor when you snatched it up? I believe I'd have been a bit trepidacious.

Kevin Messenger, Herper King extraordinaire. Those Goniurosaurus hainanensis are almost as cute as newborn sea turtles!

Thanks for the comments everyone. The trip has been great.

Don, the pucker factor was definitely extreme. It has been a long time since a snake has created such adrenaline and nerves. None of us wanted to grab it, but we were running out of time, so we had no choice - and pinning that animal was extremely nerve racking!

Warren - it's not quite that easy as going back to HK and just finding a king. I have several friends that have lived in HK for a number of years and none have seen one (combined years of around 50) - so we were quite lucky to have found one and I doubt I will ever repeat such luck.

The Azemiops was hit by a car the night before. I found it the next morning... super depressing. This is the 3rd specimen that I have found that was within a day of being killed

I wish I could have been there.. Ophiophagus has been number one on my list as well... =S I was honestly shocked that you found one in only two trips to HK. This year has been bad for herping (for me). Instead, I got this:

Happy hunting, Kevin!

Wow.....................incredible! That Sinomicrurus macclellandi really cool and the Azemiops feae is absolutely insane. and the cobra? I'm in a bit of overload! I think Hong Kong just moved up on my "need to visit" list. Great shots, can't wait to hear the rest of the stories!

Don't know how I missed this post, Kevin. Great stuff. I'm fond of the Boiga, of course. My son saw the pictures and now wants me to get him a Goniurosaurus.
How's the moon paper coming?

lol. The moon paper is finished except for the one stats hurdle Bjorn has put me through! I'm going to pass it on to my professor (has a MS in stats) and see if he can assist me. I know nothing about R, which is what Bjorn recommends I use.

Dankjewel! I'm glad that I'll eventually have someone to help out, yes. I found a lot of cool places this year, but didn't herp much because who wants to herp alone at night when they have to drive home 3.5 hours.. =S
