My twin brother came up from Florida for the labor day weekend and the herping did not disappoint. Here are some of the pics from our weekend in the field.
First off I will start with this baby rat snake. About two weeks ago under some boads I check on the regular I found a mouse had moved in and made a nest. Last Thursday I checked the board and she had several babies. Four days later I checked the board again and was very suprised to find this ratsnake looking nice and plump!
A roadtrip into southern MD didn't let us down.

Nice man! Wish I could find those coppers and timbers!

Not so sure about the broad head, looks on the small size.

Wow didn't realize the pic sized was so screwed up, sorry about that. Counted labials on both sides on the skink and Matt took close ups for MARA since they seem to be the hardest to get approved by the moderators.

That redbelly turtle looks crazy! I wish you would have grabbed that one for a closer look.

Wish I could have gotten a closer look at it too it was really neat looking. The funny thing is a few days later and two counties away we saw another one with the same thing going on with the shell!
Thanks for the compliment on the photos! Those are the first new born copperheads I've ever seen! We saw some neonate timbers too but they fled the second we saw them.

The extra large pic size did kinda distort my view. Other pics will be helpful.incuhead2000 wrote:Wow didn't realize the pic sized was so screwed up, sorry about that. I love baby coppers for some reason, did you get any pics of their tails?

Missed out on any tail shots and I wished they were showing their tails off, the bright yellow tail is one of the coolest traits

Thanks guys! My twin flipped one rock and it had four adult reds under it, that's a new record for me!

That looks like a dead sapling in a pic or two you posted;
I guess that's your brother photo'ing a snake or two there...?
Since you are now evidently opting to revisit such places, how about a follow up to your post railing against the opening of the canopy in a couple spots? I for one am curious at this point, probably not the only one either....You know,put your bias and differences aside and tell us what you've been seein there? Snakes or no snakes?

Well we saw snakes there before and we are still seeing snakes now. I am concerned about the other plants growing all over the rocks since the canopy was opened. I noticed a familiar snake moved away from his old rock since it is now covered in vines which weren't there when the trees on the Hilltop were growing.ugh wrote:

Great shots! Nice post too. I'd be careful publicly claiming to have taken a timber skin. I'm told it's illegal in NJ where they enjoy similar protection (I think). That said, You'd have to bump into a stickler of a DNR official to write you up. I was told it falls under the same legal context as taking eagle feathers or some nonsense.

Good to know and it is always good to be vague about locations for the same reason.
Taking anything on public land is illegal like taking deer antler sheds, mushrooms, stuff most people wouldn't think twice about picking up and packing out. Heck, my brother got harassed by the DNR for cleaning up trash in a park because it could have historical significance.
