A Haphazard day in the field.

Post by Josh Holbrook »

I decided to go for a brief trip to central Florida.

Headed out late (arrived to the spot at 10:30am), the sky looked like this:

no bueno.

Upon arrival: sprinkling and chilly. Oh, and windy too.

Saw a mammal or two, including this monster (for Florida) buck:

Saw a couple of birds, both beautiful:

And delicious:

This is the osceola subspecies, by the way.

I did a wee bit of hiking to ride out the weather:

But the weather remained inclement, so I went to head home.

On the way out of the area, I saw this unmistakeable shape in the road, still under rainy, windy skies:

Silly snake doesn't read field guides. Oh well, I decided one snake was enough to give the spot another loop.

Next look, mini-deja vu:

Ok. . . one more loop.

Nothing on this loop. So I decided to head home. I could've stayed and flipped some stuff, but I was more in the mood for some relaxing time alone, and flipping a lot didn't mesh with that. Right outside of my transect I saw a Caracara eating off this:

Given the rain, I think cottomouth is likely, but I would not discount EDB, Indigo or Pine either.

Ah well, not a bad day given the conditions:

Been much of the same up here - too much clouds, rain and chilliness for some things, and too little rain for other things. I enjoy a good day out by myself where I just want to drive and nothing else. Lately I've been enjoying a bit too much of the couch and refrigerator, however.
