Field guides for Mexico?

Post by DracoRJC »

Are they any? A search on Amazon did not reveal anything that looked particularly good... Suggestions?

Nothing yet for the whole country (though one is in the works), but there are a number of modern regional works that cover Aguascalientes, Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Querétaro, Hidalgo, with one for San Luis Potosí due soon, as well as quite a few regional works. Is there a particular region that interests you?

Either the Yucatan or the border states.

There are 3 books that come to mind that fit the bill. Two are travel-friendly, the third is a larger reference work, now out of print and rather pricey.

Jon Campbell's "Amphibians and Reptiles of Northern Guatemala, the Yucatán, and Belize"
http://www.amazon.com/Amphibians-Reptil ... he+Yucatan

Julian Lee's "A Field Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of the Maya World: The Lowlands of Mexico, Northern Guatemala, and Belize"
http://www.amazon.com/Field-Guide-Amphi ... he+Yucatan

and Lee's larger reference work (from which his field guide is derived): "The Amphibians and Reptiles of the Yucatán Peninsula" http://www.amazon.com/The-Amphibians-Re ... +Peninsula

Julian Lee's book is a pretty good guide to the Yucatan stuff. Some of the taxonomy is a bit outdated but otherwise it is the best source. There was a paperback version that was available for less that $20 for a while. (EDIT - I see Robert's link is only $17! I would snatch that up in a second.)

The Campbell book isn't really a great "field guide" and if you buy the big Lee book you probably won't be able to afford to go afterwards.
