Snake found by my brother in Kansas City (MO)

Post by herpseeker1978 » May 7th, 2013, 6:15 pm

I thought it was a bull, but now I'm not so sure. Here are the pictures he sent me, not good cel pictures. I think he is going to try to send some better quality pictures, my phone reduces the quality. He said it was about 4 ft long.

Definately a calligaster I have been hunting in Kc Mo all my life and have only seen one bull snake in that area, which is no longer there, and Ive only seen 3 bulls in Mo pretty rare for mo, if it was kc ks it would be different, the pics although bad are definately a calligaster

Thanks everyone! I initially thought bull because of the size and I only had the first picture, but he sent me the others and that's what made me think it was something else. The snake was found at the municipal airport, my brother is a controller there. The snake was delivered there by a hawk! Not a lot of bulls there, huh? Interesting that the one yo found was in an area that is now gone. The gopher snakes here do well among people. Anyway, thanks for all your help!

I've been herping in Eastern Kansas for about 15 years, and I've found about 10 bullsnakes in that time. Contrast that with western Kansas where you can find 10 or more in a day. Unfortunately, construction and changes in the flora (introduced trees) plus lack of fires have made Eastern Kansas unwelcoming to bullsnakes.

Definitely a prairie king, by the way, as everyone have already pointed out correctly.
