Epirus, Greece. May 2013

Post by Thor Hakonsen »

And there was this years trip to Greece over, unfortunatly..

Last year we split our trip in two, and spent half of it in Epirus (north-western Greece) and the last half on Corfu. That time we got rather cold and wet weather when we where in Epirus, and our finds there wasn't all that. But it was not all bad, and on Corfu we har great weather. This year we decided to be in Epirus the whole week, with our base as usual in Parga. From here it's only two hours trip up in the mountains to places like Metsovo
Before we left Norway heading for Greece it all forecasts said there should be rain every day.. Needless to say, they fortunatly where wrong. The weather even got a bit to good - with temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees down around Parga. We got some rain one day, and this was the day we where up in Metsovo looking for salamander - luck :)

All in all be identified 27 species, and most of them got photographed - we saw one snake species that we didn't get an ID on, so we will have to find that one again next year !

I will not bother you with to much talk (writing) - but get down to the pictures - I'll write scientific names on them, and add where they were found. If anyone should wonder about anything, from habitat to photographing techniques, don't hesitate to ask

A rather common species nearly everywhere - fantastic colors on the males

... very nice, very nice... truly a must, get back to europe b4 i regret it, nice to see habitats at herp friendly latitudes that arent in a constant state of drought too. In responding to you, im also of course sending thnx & kudoes to your partners, & excellent choices too; especially the lady .. sorry someone had2 say it! :p
The green lacertids were awesome & the slowworm, which brings me to; no Sheltopusiks eh, or maybe they didnt hang around for the camera, ... id love a link to any good threads discussing them w/ their habitats.
One day i will learn to take pix as fine as you folks.

cheers, rxr (john - uk)

Not quite sure what you are saying though..

As for Scheltopusiks, they where everywhere - I got pretty many decent shots of them last year, so we did'nt photograph them this year. But I'll see if I can't find something with them in..
