Spring and Early Summer in Illinois

Post by IllinoisGuy »

Hello, my name's Edward. I've lurked around this forum for I while and I finally decided to join.
Here is mainly a highlight of my best finds this spring, starting with the amphibian migrations in early March.

In late March their are a some Garter Snakes that make their appearance in my backyard woods every spring. Here are a few:

In late April, I was lucky enough to get permission to visit a very special area and see an awesome little frog. The Illinois Chorus Frog occurs in only a few localities in in Illinois, and this one population seems to be doing quite well.

There were usually over ten individuals calling at once from this location, also numerous were the Fowler's Toad, one night their numbers reached about a 100.

A few more animals from spring that might be worth sharing.

Common Snapping Turtle Chelydra serpentina

Eastern Box Turtle Terrapene carolina

In early May I headed out to some well known glade systems in eastern Missouri. Nothing amazing, just the usual haul of scorpions, ringnecks, and lizards.

Prairie Ringneck Snake Diadophis punctatus arnyi

Lined Snake Tropidoclonion lineatum

Eastern Yellow-belly Racer Coluber constrictor flaviventris

Prairie Racerunner Cnemidophorus sexlineatus viridis

Ground Skink Scincella lateralis

Once school got out, I had a lot more free time to go herping and exploring. The amount of rain that had fallen lately helped bring out a few snakes. All of this is from late March threw June.

I was also finally able to get my lifer copperhead at a tin site one evening. A nice big milk was found as well.

WOW! Lots of cool stuff in there.

Would you divulge the counties on your pickerel frog and lined snake? If not, no sweat - or you could PM me.

Great post.

Thanks. No Lined Snakes in Illinois, they are pretty rare here. Over in Missouri, they can be pretty common in areas.

I would like to see the type of habitat they occur in downstate. They are (to me) one of the most interesting snakes in Illinois. They are surely more widespread than the existing records would indicate, but yeah...rare for sure. Again - nice post.

Man you're killing it, some superior finds here. The patternless Prairie King was gorgeous, and the teeny box turtle was pretty cool. I don't see small ones posted much. All around a solid post here.
