The Rattlers are Out! (redux)

Post by Noah M »

I went out again last night, and holy cow! It must be hatching time or something because I saw over half a dozen rattle snakes from around 8pm to about 10pm. First though, before the sun set, I found a couple of frogs & toads.

Southern Leopard Frog (not posed on a palm frond) Seriously, I went up to some old leaves by the tree and went to flip them when about 4 of these guys leapt out in every direction. This one just happend to make itself a bit more photogenic than the others.

Then came the hoard of rattle snakes. I saw 7 total, 4 of which were AOR. Not a bad ratio if you ask me. Even split of AORs, two EDBs and two Duskies. Here are some of my better pictures.

Dusky Pigmy 01 (Sistrurus miliarius barbouri)

EDB 01 (Crotalus adamanteus)

Dusky Pigmy 02 - This one was feisty. After it moved off of the road, it curled up right there and almost continually tried to strike at me. It was like a caffeinated kid with a rubberband gun.
Pow! Pow! Pow!

While out, I also found this little guy, a fresh DOR. It looks like a Gray Rat Snake, but given my location, it may have some quadrivittata in it, which would make it a Gulf Hammock Rat Snake

And if that wasn't enough, I also came across a wonderful looking Mud Snake.

It was, to say the least, an amazing night, but I was in Blue-stripe country and I still have not found a nice Blue-striped Garter Snake. I'm quite happy with everything else though!

Thank you everyone. I'm still excited about. It is addicting. I just want to keep going out more and more, especially as the weather gets nicer down here!
