Please use this thread to record all species observed or heard in the field during the month of November.
This is to be used as a general list and no photos should be included here. Save the photos for your topics, and more importantly for your database entries.
*REMEMBER: It is our duty as members of N.A.F.H.A. to record all of our finds at http://www.naherp.com .
Be as specific as you feel you need to be in these lists, but please do not be more detailed with specific locales than a county.
When entering your records in the database, the quantity should match the number depicted in the photos.
Thanks

Re: November Species Counts
So you have to ask yourself, how an intergrade would end up here. stick with slider.
Re: November Species Counts
You'd be surprised at how often the people who we consider experts are often wrong with Photo ID. Go back in the spring, I'm sure you'll be able to find it again. You need a shot of the hind marginals and a better angle on the plastron would be good.

Re: November Species Counts
I had a lady who said she took her turtle she "rescued" to two exotic vets and told her it was a wood turtle...it was a mud turtle.
I had a co-worker who had the Herpetologist at the University of Tennessee tell her she had a pet musk turtle. It was a map turtle.
These are just two personal examples...and I'm no expert myself.

Re: November Species Counts
3) Temporal stripe correct thickness and position but incorrect color for red-eared slider. Carapacial pattern within range of red ear but marginal patterns incorrect.kyle loucks wrote:So you have to ask yourself, how an intergrade would end up here. stick with slider.
That's what Bartlett said. I don't know how I could view it is 100% red eared slider when it does not have a red-ear. I find weird turtles in Bucks County all the time that people I guess let go. I've seen Western Painted Turtles, a Southern Painted Turtle, Yellow Belly Sliders....I can see how from my photo you could say intergrade, but there is no way I could say 100% red eared slider. I agree with you that I not sure about Cumberland Slider...
Re: November Species Counts
You tell me which is a better match, the pictures were drawn like that for a reason. I think you are trying to put a round peg in a square hole because something is slightly "off" on a species you are very familiar with, so you are trying to assign it an ID of a species that you are much less familiar with. Variation in traits are found in every species, in some cases that variation may go beyond the limit of what you are familiar with, but that doesnt mean it cant be that species.
Dick Bartlett is from FL. He has probably seen very few red-bellied cooters.

I don't know when he moved to Florida, but Dick Bartlett is originally from Springfield, MA, or thereabouts.spinifer wrote:

No dog in this fight -- I have no idea what the turtle is -- but just had to toss that in there.

Completely unrelated to what anyone found (and I know I know, I "left" this chapter for the Rocky Mountain chatper - but they never post anything!)...but Andrea, you mentioned Dick Bartlett is originally from Springfield, MA. Well, I have a lot of extended Bartlett family on my mother's side and I'm originally from Walpole, MA. Makes me wonder...
