Flipped Lifer Night Snake
Well, yesterday I flipped a very small 7" plump night snake very close to my home - a lifer for me --- never even knew these lived around here. It suddeny was a cool day after many boiling hot days - i figured the change in weather may bring a couple up. Found in Altadena at c. 1600' at 7:00 pm. I think i may do a bit of herping this evening even though i gimped my ankle and knee tripping in a crack of my driveway Pics coming soon (need to download them.... er, pics of the night snake... not my fall ).

You seem to have a cool little herping area around your house. Keep it up (the herping, not the falling )...John
Re: Flipped Lifer Night Snake
Awesome find, I had no idea there were night snakes to be ahead in our area. Can't wait to see the pictures. And I hope your ankle isn't too bad.
Take care,
Robert

Cool. I'd like to see the pics too.
I have road cruised a number of them but I have not yet flipped one.
I was there when a friend flipped one once so eventually I probably will at that spot.
Are they less commonly seen down south? I have found several in Arizona and 7 or 8 in the Bay Area.

I live in SD and have found four in my area in the 15 years I've been actively herping there. I'm sure they are more common in better areas.
Here'a a San Diego specimen for comparison

Re: Flipped Lifer Night Snake
They are the most common snake I find under AC in Western Riverside County. I've heard they are rarely found in parts of S.D. and I know of only one being found in Palos Verdes. Congrats on the find.
Re: Flipped Lifer Night Snake
Nice find! That's one I've wanted to find for ages.
Re: Flipped Lifer Night Snake
Night snakes are very common in San Diego county. I find between 20-30 every season. They are , as Ross mentioned, most commonly found under artificial cover; Boards, trash, stumps, concrete, tires, etc., etc........
Riverside county abounds with them, and they take a close second to the rosy boa, which is the most common snake in that county, or so it seems to me.
There used to be an area in the north county where a few very large night snakes had taken up residence. That entire hillside has been turned into office buildings, so I suppose we can say goodnight to those particular specimens. Hazpat and I once flipped an extremely large night snake that was in the process of swallowing an adult alligator lizard. That was before the digital camera, so I do not have any photos to back myself up with. Sorry.
Under rated animals. More night snake posts please!

I have to get to Southern California sometime. I just have to.billboard wrote:Night snakes are very common in San Diego county.

They are up here too (Hypsiglena ochrorhyncha) - but seem to be extremely rare. Well, rarely found, like most rare species, they are probably abundant but just not where they are easy to find.

Nice shots, thanks for uploading them. This is what we need more of, people sharing their images.

Cool pics. Nightsnakes were one of my local targets here in Chatsworth for years. My daughter and I finally found one last year.

Yeah, thanks for posting your pics. Very cool-looking snake, despite the small size.

that little night snake was cool - interestingly, he looked remarkably similar in color and patterning to the neonate helleri i have seen in the same locale in the past.
