its good to see some folks having productive trips in the dead of winter.

I went out in a downpour to an Ambystoma site in EBR today in search of Smallmouth Salamanders (would be a first encounter for me). Struck out on them, but did find some nice sallies. I got absolutely soaked but it was worth it. the list:

13 January 2014, East Baton Rouge Parish

6 Marbled Salamanders (Ambystoma opacum)
2 Mole Salamanders (Ambystoma talpoideum)
2 Leopard frogs
2 Bronze frogs
1 Gulf Coast Toad

Thanks Beanie,
that's the known spot. I was just curious because of the Ambystoma records, which are not going to be associated with the spot you mentioned.

Duck season was really slow for us this past year. So I did find time to get two Ambystoma 1st encounters from dec and jan. This was a pretty productive weeken for salamander.

EBR 25 January 2014, Preston and I.
4 dwarf salamders (Eurycea quadridigitata)
1 three-lined salamander(Eurycea guttolineata
1 marbled salamander, another mass of eggs (Ambystoma opacum)
2 mole salamanders (Ambystoma talpoideum)

1 gulf coast toad
5 chorus frogs
2 leopard frogs

EBR 27 January 2014 at small Ambystoma pond
1 marbled salamander (Ambystoma opacum)
1 mole salamander (Ambystoma talpoideum)
2 smallmouth salamanders (Ambystoma texanum). *1st encounters

Went back and listened to my recordings from 1/11 and heard what I believe to be a single call from a Crawfish Frog (Lithobates areolatus).

They are known from this area and another herper apparently heard them calling from a little north of where I was that night.

Sort of a lifer, I guess, although I didn't see it and I didn't actually hear it while I was in the field. I only heard it when I played back my recording at home.
If they get any rain in the next few weeks, I will certainly make the pilgrimage back to this area.

2/5/14

Did a day run to Kisatchie with Eric (ritt) and others from the LSU herp lab to look for Plethodon serratus. It rained nearly the entire day, which was key to our success.

3 Plethodon serratus
>= 5 Ambystoma opacum
1 Ambystoma maculatum
>= 5 Eurycea quadradigitata
1 Scincella lateralis
