How many people will download the NAHERP phone app in 2014?

Post by jonathan »

For people who have Android or iPhones, using Don's NAHERP app seems like a really simple way to increase data entry. Once they see how easy it is, I think that a lot of people who don't enter data, or have stopped entering due to boredom/time issues, would have fun beginning to enter quite a lot.

What if we made it a chapter goal this year to find 25 people - whether already members or not - to download and use the NAHERP app for the first time?

Don's instructions for how to download and use the app with NAHERP are here: http://www.naherp.com/app.php

Here's the pitch Mike Wolverton made for the app on the Northwest Forum:
M Wolverton wrote:As far as entering data, it's a snap with the smart phone app. No spending forever on the computer after herping, they are ready to sync to the database about 45 seconds after you find the herp and take the photo.
M Wolverton wrote:I find a critter, get out of the car and take a photo with the phone. Less than a minute later I have the vouchered record saved on the phone complete with GPS data. I can find quite a few of them in a night and store them on the phone. When I get to somewhere that has good cell phone reception, I just hit the synch button. Blamo, all those records are in the database.
M Wolverton wrote:Don made them for iphones and androids. IIRC the app is free, you just search for naherp in the app store and download it.

Basically you are creating the records on your phone as you herp. It doesn't have all the same fields, but anyone who wants to can go back and add more info later. GPS, date, and time are automatic. You can also set it for a particular state, and that will be automatic. It's very quick.

People that like to take great photos could do the smart phone record in less than a minute and then break out the real camera and go to work. For those that don't care about good photos, like me, the smart phone cameras are about on par with most point and shoot cameras.

Download the app, upload the records. Download the app, upload the records. I'll get it right.

:thumb: :) ...just remember, as an end user you are lowly whereas the server is up there some where in some dark and mysterious cloud (probably like Don's basement) ;-)

how secure is the location data? Alternately, is there a way to edit it to broad parameters so nothing inappropriate is disclosed?

Only you can see the locality information in the database. The GPS data, specific locality field, and method of capture are all only viewable to you. Anyone else can only view down to county level; no specific locales can be viewed by others online or elsewhere. When someone requests your specific data points for research or conservation purposes, you control whether or not they can access your data.

And no, no other NAHERP members or officers can view your data either. Technically, the database administer could break into the database and steal it, but there's a reason why we chose Don Becker to be the database administrator and have trusted him for 7 years. In his day job, banks trust him with their data, and I've yet to hear anyone suggest any reason to do otherwise.

More information about how to use the database (from a traditional computer) can be viewed here:

It just might be the reason for me to upgrade to a new phone. Well that and the other million cool things I can't do with my hand-me-down that barely even makes calls.... :? Now if I could somehow talk my wife into paying for it.... ;)

Has anyone else noticed how phones got smaller, and smaller, and smaller, and......... and now they are getting bigger, and bigger, and bigger? Maybe I'll wait until they are the size of a "boom-box" and I can look 8-) carrying it around on my shoulder.

Or maybe I'll hold out for the car that I can take pictures of snakes with without slowing down. Now there's an innovation. :D

The phone isn't getting bigger, your camera/DVD player/boombox/computer is getting a ton smaller. ;)

I just tried it and it works great. I just use a general lat/long in case the data gets out. 33 117 for SD, etc.

Common names would help a bit and encourage newbies to enter data.

Also, is there a way it modify the date? How about entering temp, etc?

It's definitely a great app. I'll enter data now as it's fun and easy. Well done!

Uh, yeah...about those entries Lou...something went wrong with your entries. You've got some wrong dates and times for kings, like zonata dated today, an hour from now... I left you a message about it.

Everyone who is using this app better check your dates and times...

I've tried several times to download the app to my rotary phone. It just won't take. All these newfangled contraptions...

Fundad gave me a rotary phone last week. First one I've seen in 20 years. I like how it goes click, click, click when you dial a number. Way faster than push button phones...
