Any advice for the St. Augustine/JAX area?

Post by Brendan Murray » March 13th, 2014, 6:40 am

Hi Guys,

I have a work trip next week in St. Augustine(thank God because the winter has been brutal in the NE). I won't have much time to herp but plan to get out for at least one morning hike and maybe do some evening road cruising. I'm guessing night road cruising in North Florida isn't that productive this time of year but I'm busy during the days.

Any advice, even general tips would be helpful.

Thanks!

Brendan

I HIGHLY recommend checking out the St. Augustine Alligator Farm. You can see all of the species of crocodilian in one place.

There's a conservation area called Moses Creek in St Johns County that I've been meaning to check out. Looks promising for herps on the land and birds at the creek. Might be worth you doing a hike there.

Check out some of the green spaces in Duval County. You might find a few things. Worse case you see some scenic beach landscapes.

I second the alligator farm. Worth it if you've never been. Also, great spot for birds. They have a rookery there worth looking at.

I recommend a dune walk in Anastasia State Park. That, or a similar one at the other end of the island, on Fort Matanzas Nat'l Monument. Lots of tortoises, and a good chance at some of the dryland snakes. Bring binocs for terrapin spotting.

Just watch out for the pokey plants, and don't kick any rattlesnakes.

Good luck,
Jimi
