Peruvian Amazon May 2010

Post by Ed Metzger »

Hey field herpers, you recently saw a series of threads by Chris Gillette from our Peruvian Amazon trip earlier this year. The trip was absolutely a dream come true. We spent about 10 days in the field, collecting 48 individual snakes across 19 species, along with plenty of other awesome animals. Since he pretty much covered everything, I'm just going to limit this thread to what I consider my best photos.

Hope you all enjoy,

Ed Metzger (formerly Street Killer)

First lesson learned, stay away from discount airfare, no matter how good the deal is.

Welcome to the Amazon! Taken with a screw on fisheye attachment.

It only took Chris a few seconds to realize he'd rather get wet than wear this raincoat.

Xenoxybelis argenteus. A leaf blocked part of my flash but this has become one of my favorites.

Sometimes the photographer becomes the photographed. The resulting photo was seen in Chris' thread.

AWESOME shots. I really want my chance to make a trip lake this to come sooner. Most of the thumbnail dart frogs were split off into Ranitomeya sp. including Ranitomeya ventrimaculatus, not that it's that important, same frog either way, beautiful.

Great stuff! I love the shot of the monkey skull with the beads. And that shot of the wire tailed manakin is fantastic - those are pretty cool little birds. I can't believe it sit still long enough for you to snap that picture!

Cheers,
Ryan

Excellent all around! I was actually most taken with the planarian. I haven't seen too many photos of those, and the ones I have seen are mostly drab colors.

Nice! A little bit old topic, but I would like to ask where did you find the Helicops? Inside water I believe, but in river, stream or stagnant pool water? How did it behaves when you aproaches next to it? thanks
