Pacific Northwest in June- Trip planning

Post by Zach_Lim » April 8th, 2014, 8:14 am

Hello fellow herpers,

Zach from the California Chapter here.

It looks like my new band Scalped will be going on tour up north this June in support of our new demo/ record (if the vinyl is released at this time).

Obviously, why waste time in stuffy record shops or hanging out with dirty punks when I can go herping?

Is mid June a decent time to herp up north? Any tips?

I take it that along the coastal areas conditions would be similar to that of Northern California?

Are my chances for snakes, particularly the various Thamnophis species/subspecies, decent?

Thank you for any advice!

June 19- Portland, OR
June 20 - Olympia, WA
June 21 - Vancouver, BC
June 22 - Seattle, WA
June 23 - drive back to SF

If you are after garter snakes you won't be disappointed in W WA. June is probably the most productive month up here for the various snakes.

Zach,

If you are looking for garters, I can definitely help. I have some good spots you can hit up, and if I am available on Sunday June 22 for a few hours, I might be able to meet you somewhere in the field.

Let me know your goals, and I will see what I can do. I am living out in the greater Seattle area.

You can PM me for more detailed discussion, if you want locations and such.

Look forward to having you up here!

This might wet your appetite a bit...

A student captured and brought this lovely specimen to show me today at work:

She looked recently shed, and although had some major scars on the tail and portion of the belly most likely from a cat, was in healthy condition. I guess female because the snake was large, and rather thick possibly gravid. I could be mistaken, though.

Thank you guys for the great suggestions, as well as picture of encouragement!

I will get in contact with you, PNW (sorry, I have forgotten your name), after I finalize the tour.

Beautiful sirtalis, as well!
