Gulf Coast spring so far

Post by Coluber Constrictor »

Due to unusual weather patterns this spring, numbers of herps have been low, but I have still managed to find some pretty awesome stuff.

Newts from February in Baldwin County:

James, your pictures are looking really, really good! Glad you got Flickr figured out.
Your dekayi looks really thick. Gravid?
I love the newts in the tadpool.
Great post!

Glad you enjoyed my post. Thanks for helping me find snakes yesterday!

Pretty sure that dekay was too small and too early in the year to be gravid. Probably just gorged on slugs.

Great in situ shot of the newt... I don't know if I'd have the patience to grab a photo before grabbing the animal.

Not associating you with your screen name, I was reading this thread and thought to myself "Damn, I've seen that stray dog, too. What are the odds?".

When did you find the Coral? I don't recall you mentioning it. And the distinctive snake track is actually that of an Apalachicola Kingsnake. (Nah, just kidding.)

P.S. The dog's faithful owner never returned my call.

The coral snake was not my find, although I can't remember who it was who found it.

These are all very neat. I'm jealous of the live eastern hog, and a live coral. The pictures look great too :thumb:

Now moving into summer down here on the Gulf Coast, which means in addition to herping, I've been keeping myself busy with this stuff:

N. fasciata that seems to be pretty shaken up by a close encounter with some skate bro's:

The other white meat of frogs:

Not a beautiful specimen, but still pretty cool, as I rarely see this sp.:

Oak Toad:

Oak Toad habitat, Jackson County MS:

Saw this the other day at one of my favorite spots. I have been going here many times a year for several years and this is the first EDB I have seen here (actually the only live one I've seen in the Mobile/Baldwin County area yet):

Other fun stuff from the same day:

Intergrade slider with interesting pattern:

Good stuff, James.
Script and pics took us right along.
A good shot of a Prothonotary is always a special treat (outside of England, anyway).

That EDB does not look to be a small one either!

I like the shot of the two different kinds of lizard, chilling on the same log.
The EDB is wonderful!

Thanks for looking, everybody! Regarding the rattler, he was probably in the 4 foot range.
