Peru - Iquitos, Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve

Post by Cotinga »

Hi everyone
I'm new to this great forum and I'm not very experienced with field herping. From September for several months, I will be living beside Allpahuayo Mishana Reserve in Peruvian Amazonia. I hope to periodically post some herp photos and ask for your help with species ID.
If anyone has visited this Reserve, I would love to hear about your herp lists and if you have posted photos somewhere.
cheers
Andrew

Welcome to the forum, Andrew!

I don't know about that particular reserve, but there have been a number of lengthy posts here about reserves near Iquitos (some of them by me). For example:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=15446 (and followups)
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17269 (and followups)
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=18852

These should certainly get you excited about the herping possibilities in that area. I'm sure there are many people on the forum (including myself) who would be happy to help with species IDs when it comes to that.

Enjoy your trip!

OMG time has flown and I have at last made it back to Iquitos and the white sands rainforest of the Nanay River. Does anyone recognise this species? I will have to improve my photography especially for night excursions.

It's a teiid, I think most likely Kentropyx altamazonica. But I haven't sat down with a regional guide or key to be sure.

OK, now I managed to see the photo in larger-than-stamp size and I think FrogO_Oeyes may be spot on.

Thanks for your help. This guy has me stumped now. He has a face like a freshly-snapped twig and is very reluctant to move, no matter how close you get. Any suggestions on ID?

That's a young Anolis bombiceps or possibly a closely-related species.

Thank you, John. That looks right to me. BTW I came across this trip report from some "spider people" that includes this species and other reptiles. If you haven't already seen it, the link is

Thanks for the link to moloch's report. He is a wonderful, knowledgeable naturalist who has also posted on this forum many times. I had the good fortune of being able to look for herps with him near his home south of Sydney, Australia. I hadn't seen this post of his before.
