This is exactly the type of shot I was hoping folks would post, on the 'pictorial tribute' to Kent, I started (For Kent) You're Very good Nic... but no one could match Kent at these shots...RobertH wrote:

Re: What are your favorite shots from this year?
I have been wanting to take a picture of a snake in burned area of the Angeles forest. Luckily for me I met the most photogenic snake.
Southern Pacific Rattlesnake - Crotalus oreganus helleri by Greg Litiatco, on Flickr
This shot was cool as I never shot a good predatory prey interaction. Those snake truely live up to their name as racers.
Striped Racer - (Coluber lateralis lateralis) by Greg Litiatco, on Flickr
Nothing fancy but the shot turned out well for substituting an off camera flash with my head lamp
Spotted Leaf-nosed Snake - Phyllorhynchus decurtatus by Greg Litiatco, on Flickr
And not a fun snake to photograph because all they do is zoom around if you can't get a few shots after you flip them.
Luckily for me I got a randomly nice shot as I walked along besides it as a paparazzi would.

Re: What are your favorite shots from this year?
I decided to focus on becoming a better photographer this year. Specifically, I was trying to both perfect my style of "field guide" looking shot as well as try "non-field guide" shots, as well (contradictory, I know).
I also picked up a 100mm Macro Lens for my Canon Rebel T3i about a week ago and have been able to take some shots. I'll post some of my better pre-Macro lens first then my favorites with the Macro.
Pre-Macro Lens:
Foothill Yellow-legged Frog- Marin County, CA
Coast Mountain Kingsnake- San Mateo County, CA
Blainville's Horned Lizard- San Benito County, CA
Sierra Mountain Kingsnake- El Dorado County, CA
CA Red-sided Garter Snake- Marin County, CA
CA Legless Lizard- Santa Cruz County, CA
Western Pond Turtle- Contra Costa County, CA
Forest Sharp-tailed Snake- Santa Clara County, CA
Coast Garter Snake- Marin County, CA
Prairie Ringnecked Snake- Okalhoma County, OK
Plains Garter Snake- Adams County, Colorado
Gulf Coast Toad- Harris County, TX
Bakersfield Legless Lizard- Kern County,CA
Western Yellow-bellied Racer- San Mateo County, CA
Post-Macro Lens
Northern Pacific Rattlesnake- San Mateo County, CA

Re: What are your favorite shots from this year?
Well, seeing this post gives me a sigh of relief because I definitely do not have time for a part 2 of my 2015 photog post..lol And Nick, thank you for breakin the ice on a heavy shot count All great stuff people!! That connected black dorsal zonta, toad close up jabba shot, underwater weird fish, habitatal mastocophis backdrops, hunting/feeding, legless lizard beautiful layouts and morphage, rattlers of all color and pattern,ect,ect... list goes on. That's why I'm here Keep it up guys
I'm gonna dedicate this set to Mr VanSooy... without having a place that appreciates this stuff, this forum (set up by Kent and others) I don't think I'd be doing this kind of photography at all. Glad to have a place to share it

Re: What are your favorite shots from this year?
While maybe a lot of you do this, I noticed Porter that most of your shots put the subject off center. I've read that this actually makes for a more interesting shot, and I'd have to agree. It's called the "Rule of Thirds". Do you do this intentionally when you shoot? Or do you crop to this look later? How about the rest of you? I try and do this while videoing, but with an unpredictable subject, it can be hard.
Great shots everyone.
Great shots everyone.
Re: What are your favorite shots from this year?
Yes! In fact, I do it with every shot I take... I think shape and balance are my main interest. Negative space behind and around the subject are a shape in itself and I'm always adjusting that (angle, like a pool cue, camera to subject in relation to light) to find something appealing to myself. Like the grass spider shot on the water lilly-ish plant thing lol The spider is neat...kinda sitting on a throne in his own organic castle... but its the balance of the shapes around him that made me take that shot. So, I think I'm always searching for stuff like that in nature and then capture the beauty I come across, once seeing it. Most of my uncropped photos fall into the Thirds Rule, but 97% of my shots are cropped at least a little. I normally know what I'm gonna crop out before ever taking the shot. If something looks off balance in a pic it's usually intentional because I'm trying to include that one blade of grass the crosses brown nicely over the green in the right hand corner or that one chunk of dorsal pattern the sets this individual out from the rest...stuff like that. I have a natural attraction to the obscure, so I think that tends to be a standard on some level, more than any rule of thumb. If it doesn't interest me, then it's not photo worthy, and believe me, I'm not easy to please..hahaLouB747 wrote:While maybe a lot of you do this, I noticed Porter that most of your shots put the subject off center. Great shots everyone.
I notice a lot of people do it. I think it's great to be able to bounce ideas off one another for inspiration. When I first started youtubing for snake vids, I came across some photo posts of people like Mike Spencer, Chad Lane, Natalie Mcnear... it really tripped me out because the concept never really even crossed my mind that people actually do this. I specifically remember seeing a Black Salamander shot of Chads that was taking in Macro (I think). Looking at a salamaders face, purple highlights, iris, pores and all, for the first time ( too small to see in life size) really hit me artistically. Like woah lol And seeing Natalie, a girl, taking about field herping like a guy might take on sports. Really opened my eyes... I found myself reevaluating the relationship with the girl living with me at the time. Made me realize why I felt so estranged from her. Like, holy shit! girls do this? lol Really cool Made a huge impact in my life.... not only that, she was frickin good! Damn good photographer and herper. I have to admit, those photographers (and the ones who inspired them, whoever they may be, probly fFHF peeps) really open up a new door or rather a new pallet to work from. Helped me get back to the person I used to be. Very inspirational.
Oh, and then I saw... Owen Holt photography...
