Planning to return to Colorado next summer for vacation, but for a longer time, and thinking of a short side trip down to New Mexico (staying in Raton), as have never been there before. This would be in July (I know that's not ideal but thats when I have off, and we realize our daytime "herping hours" are limited). Is it worthwhile in that area if our interest in snakes (observing....not collecting)? I see there are at least public lands (parks/preserves) but is it too high of altitude for decent herping? Should we just skip it and dedicate more days to southeast colorado?
