This post is meant to serve as a guide that is updated on a recurring basis using user-submitted photos. As most of us have learned, tadpoles are notoriously difficult to identify, especially when they vary greatly in appearance even within a species. Anyone who has turned to the internet for tadpole identification guides have likely found few reliable sources, most of which only contain a couple of photos of tadpoles from a certain species.
My vision for this guide is to use user-submitted photos of verified species of Anuran eggs, tadpoles, and metamorphs in order to help facilitate identification. As such, I need your help to make it worthwhile. Every Anuran species encountered in the United States east of the Mississippi River is included in this guide, to include non-native species (at least those with tadpole forms). I will accept photos encompassing eggs all the way up to froglets and recently metamorphed indivudals. Again, please only contribute photos if you are confident of the species. You can either private message me or post the photos here, and I will add them to the main post. After updates are made, I'll make regular replies to this thread indicating as much, to include species with new photos. All user-submitted photos will be credited to those who took the photo, whether it is their full name or username.
I need your help to make this guide a success! I've been working on it for the past year, and we already have a good number of submissions. Yet, there are still many species that are not represented by photographs in the guide. Your contributions are greatly appreciated! As a living guide, this tadpole identification guide will never be finished, nor will it be successful without input from the community.
- Matt

Updated with some photos of Green Frog tadpoles, Wood Frog tadpoles (newly emerged), and Wood Frog eggs. Should have some better photos of Wood Frog tadpoles in the coming weeks as they just started emerging and need some time to grow.
Don't forget to message me if you have any photos to contribute!

Updated with tadpole photos for Lithobates sylvaticus, Psuedacris crucifer, and Scaphiophus holbrookii.
Re: Visual Guide to Tadpoles and Morphs of the Eastern U.S.
Since this has been moved, and given the amount of work Matt put into creating this, I would hate to see this get buried. I wonder if a moderator would be willing to create a separate forum for things that previously had been stickied. Things like this and maybe the bio pages? I think this thread is clearly a much different animal than just a field report.

Re: Visual Guide to Tadpoles and Morphs of the Eastern U.S.
Thanks Noah. I just had a brief moment of panic after considering what may have happened to this thread after the merge. Thankfully you bumped it right to the top!Noah M wrote:Since this has been moved, and given the amount of work Matt put into creating this, I would hate to see this get buried. If the mods won't sticky it, I may consider migrating everything to a website. I just need to figure out a way forward with that and what the best format might be.

Re: Visual Guide to Tadpoles and Morphs of the Eastern U.S.
I’ve been one of Matt's strongest moral supporters of this ambitious task, and hope some from other geographical areas will contribute material.
Without subchapters, a general sub forum would be constructive, where folks can feel comfortable asking basic questions on "how to", Is this a *****?, can you ID this herp and why did you ID it as such?, etc. (e.g. how?, what?, when?, where in habitat?, Why?) This may also be a good place for a guide like Matt's to some of the tougher ID areas.

Can Scott or a mod please PM me regarding the future of this thread? Thank you.
Re: Visual Guide to Tadpoles and Morphs of the Eastern U.S.
I'm just bumping this up.
I emailed this to a friend who does some basic webdesign. I think it wouldn't be hard to make into a website.
Just an idea - I wonder if it could be housed here: https://ashtonbiodiversity.com/

I just looked at this fantastic resource - great work! Hopefully it can be stuck on fhf in a permanent format.
If not, perhaps an edited version of this post could be placed on www.amphibiaweb.org or separc.org

Re: Visual Guide to Tadpoles and Morphs of the Eastern U.S.
Thanks Jeff! Noah M. is helping me out with some options. If anything, I may maintain this thread and the website in parallel. We may try to house it on a pre-existing nature preserve site smaller in scope than something like amphibiaweb. We'll see.Jeff wrote:I just looked at this fantastic resource - great work! On another note, update the thread with some Hyla chrysoscelis, Lithobates palustris, and Scaphiophus holbrookii photos.

Keep us up to date on your plans for it, such a useful resource to have. It would be great to see it for western species:

Re: Visual Guide to Tadpoles and Morphs of the Eastern U.S.
Update: Load a bunch of Cope's Gray Treefrog pictures from a batch I raised, and a few from Bill McGighan. That species is pretty much good to go, except for eggs.
A website version is getting close to launching. If anyone would like to help take up the mantle for a guide for Western species (or integrating it with this one), please contact me. I am very unfamiliar with the Western Anuran species.
