A few finds from Northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Post by Nick Evans »

Hi all,

I recently spent a bit of time in the northern parts of my home province, KwaZulu-Natal. The area is renown for being the 'diversity hot-spot' of the country. I didn't have too much luck this trip, although I think the drought, which has crippled the area for the past year or two, has affected activity.
Still, I did manage to see a few cool things!

Black File Snake (Gonionotophis nyassae)
This is only the second individual I've ever seen. It was right outside my cabin!

Image

Marbled Tree Snake (Dipsadoboa aulica)
Found by my friend in the shower.

Image

Vine Snake (Thelotornis capensis)
Staff, at the one place that I was staying at, were getting their slingshots ready to kill this beaut. I tried to photograph it, but only managed to get one or two shots before needing to remove it.

Brown House Snake (Boaedon capensis)

Image

Rhombic Egg-eater (Dasypeltis scabra)

Image

Van Dam's Worm Lizard (Zygaspis vandami)

Image

Flap-necked Chameleon (Chamaeleo dilepis)

Image

Mottled Shovel-nosed Frog (Hemisus marmoratus)

Image

African Bullfrog (Pyxiecephalus edulis)

Image

Shovel-footed Squeaker (Arthroleptis stenodactylus)

Image

Brown-backed Tree Frog (Leptopelis mossambicus)

Hope you enjoyed the post!

Really nice photos. You did very well finding species in drought conditions. You have encouraged me to add southern Africa to my herp travel list!

Hey Nick I can't believe your drought is still persisting. Can't wait to hear your stories when you all come out of it.
Still some nice finds as usual, just lacking the numbers. Love the file snake. I am assuming you stayed at your same little favorite spot near Kirsty's place you sent us to? They had a great file snake story for us while we were there.

Take care and drop me a WhatsApp sometime.
I'll send you a link to our Baja trip last year. It turned out great!
