Malcolm's pitviper (Trimeresurus malcolmi) from Mt.Kinabalu

Post by mrtree »

During my very first herping trip this year, from 3rd to 7th Jan, I found this beautiful snake on the last night. Well, it is my snake of year 2019 for sure.

Nobody but God knows the answer to that. But apparently the deity liked the idea enough to use it over, and over, and over. Many SE Asian arboreal vipers have reddish tails. Sometimes it varies by gender or population, but it's common. Gonyosoma oxycephalum is a colubrid from the same general region, with some morphs/localities showing the same tendency. Mimicry? Temporary loss of creativity? Ha ha.

Thanks Hang for the malcolmi pics. Was it cold up there? Is that a relatively drier or wetter time of year at that site?

cheers
