Minnesota herping in December (same as main forum)

Post by Erica Hoaglund »

Hello all,

Have been doing some winter mudpuppy trapping for work this winter. We have caught many mudpups and battled much ice and snow...hope you enjoy

So far December temps have been pretty typical (maybe slightly colder than usual) mostly in the single digits to 30's (Fahrenheit). On the day these traps were set the high was about 18 degrees, on the day they were checked it topped 24 degrees! A heat wave ;-)

First off, here are some of the tools of the winter herping trade

Here is the first step in checking traps in December, get to the traps

this is how that is done....

This what you are looking for, this particular trap was under 2-4 inches of ice after being set in fairly open water 3 days before

and here is what its all about :-)

Can't let the little dudes be out of the water for more than a few second or they would freeze to death! So all are released after only a quick photograph.

So, that is how we pass the winter in frozen Minnesota, thanks for looking!

We are acutally trying several differnt types of bait: liver, sardines, minnows, worms and dog food. Data still pending on what is most effective.

Wow, this is great! What is your trapping success rate? How many traps do you have to check until you get one?

Corey,

We have pretty good success, although we specifically chose a trapping spot where we know there to be mudpups in the area. We get about half our traps with a couple of mudpups in each every time so far.
