Anyone like Herps and Back County Hiking?

Post by Fieldnotes » March 3rd, 2011, 6:21 pm

If so, shoot me an email. I got a bunch of backpacking gear for Christmas that i've been dying to use. In late to early summer i'm hoping to explore the high Sierras, in April a trip to Santa Cruz Island, and even a trip this March to Anza-Borrego or Joshua Tree.

Well, you got one thing right, herpers hate hiking. Most of the time someone leads you to their secret spot its right beside the road and don’t get me started on road cruising.

I hike just about everywhere to herp.

28 miles on my January trip - tomorrow, who knows - I'm getting ride partway but I'll probably do close to 30, I really want to find an Ensatina tomorrow, hopefully it won't be too cold for them. All this rain should have brought them out if it isn't too cold. Another R boylii would be sweet as well. Probably won't be good for many reptiles, maybe pond turtles or contia - I guess I'll find out.

Well, many of the places I hike too aren't *that* far from roads. Though many of the roads are dirt and some of them explicitly forbid un-authorized motorized vehicles.

Yesterday we went 2 miles or more back from a dirt road that was already miles from where most herpers look. You are right about most herpers though; They don't like to walk much, But I am not most herpers. I will be in AB this month also, right off the PCT. When are you going to be out there?
