Thanks, Jason, for a killer morning in So Cal!

Post by RenoBart »

So, I stole away from work this morning and met up with Jason for a nice morning of herping around the Anaheim area. It was raining and a little on the cool side, but the day started like this:

Image

For me, flipping a 4 snake board was a first!! Awesome!!!

And then Jason flipped a couple nice kings!!! Here's me with the kings.

Ricky and his daughter came and joined the fun shortly after. (cute kid..."nobody home")

And now I am back at work...exhausted, but quite pleased with the day. My pics are a little on the crap side, but I blame the rain for that!!

You guys did pretty good. The Newport is a cool find. I'm not sure how common they are in that area, but they can be tough to find. Thats a lot of helleri too. They always seem to be found where ever kingsnakes are found. Nice finds, guys. :thumb:

Thanks Ross and Dan. I was definitely stoked on the Newport, it is the first I have found at that location.

We definitely had a good morning, especially considering that it was raining most of the time.

8 Southern Pacifics
2 Kingsnakes
2 Ringnecks
1 Gopher

As Bart mentioned, the rain kept us from taking our time with the photos. Here are a few more

Yeah, I don't know why that picture came out so big, I uploaded it with the other 3.

Nice, Bart!
Glad you were able to get out. SoCal kings look a lot different and the gophers are a lot uglier than the ones up north we got you, huh?

Awesome stuff, Bart! If the weather would be decent for once this month I could be having those kinds of numbers up here! :(

It's good to see you were able to meet up with another herper and make your limited time down there worthwhile. The kings are sweet, but Mike's right... Damn that gopher is butt-ugly. I thought the ones down there were supposed to look cooler than P. c. catenifer.

Yeah, it was awesome. Those Kings were nice. I'm curious, the one pictured that is ready to shed, I noticed how plump its lower head/neck looks, and it even has a blue-ish tint to it. Is that "normal"?

The gopher was not quite as nicely marked as the northern ones are, but still, a very nice, docile animal.

3 days ago I caught a brown water snake that was very opaque and had the same swelling in the throat. I was wondering the same thing....

I think I read somewhere online that it's a URI some snakes get in the winter when it's cold and damp, which usually clears up once the temperatures rise and it dries out a bit.

Yeah, it's most likely a URI, which can be pretty common with cold/damp weather snakes. The bluish I imagine is just caused from loose skin and a bit of liquid, same as the bluish of the eye.

Man, this is bery impressive.
I've gotta place some AC in Illinois.
I wonder if flicking that beetle out of the way if that is a good idea.

LOL, thanks. For some reason I couldn't get "UTI" out of my head and that confused me...

Bart...I'm just glad you were not skunked. The first spot has been a great source of pride for me and I'm glad you guys turned up those kings. It was a pain in the A#% to haul that wood up there. Glad somebody was "home."
