Tejon Ranch trip + some SoCal stuff

Post by Jason Mintzer » April 18th, 2011, 2:15 am

First, I will start with the April 17 NAFHA California trip to Tejon Ranch.

Hellihooks turned up these two Western Rattlesnakes. What do you all think, helleri or oreganus?

We turned up a few Blainville's

And some Xantusia vigilis

Hellihooks also found the prettiest fence lizard I have ever seen

Those are antelope in the background

It was definitely a fun day. Thanks to Todd for organizing the trip.

Now, some stuff I have found in SoCal

I think that male was just a dark Oreganus Helli intergrades may go up Tejon pass as north as we were, but then the influence would have to extend eastward through the Tehatchapis. that said... I certainly thought Helli when I saw it...which I've seen LOTS of... Norpacs... only 1/2 dozen or so... :D jim

Btw... speaking of intergrades... we flipped 7 intergrade gophers at a spot I know, (in less than 1 hr) in that same area, half an hr or so after the survey ended... So sometimes it's not what ya know... but rather 'where/when' ya know... :D
edit... here's the one pic I took of the most "Great Basin-looking" gopher...

It was nice meeting you yesterday! Great pics, love them Cal Kings.

-Isaac

p.s. Did them scratches from those cows come out? Your car looked thrashed!

Great photos of some neat finds!

That last photo I'd be more inclined to think some mammal did it. Great blue herons down here swallow even round stingrays whole.

Thanks guys.

It was great meeting you as well Isaac. No the scratches didn't come out, those f$#@king cows jacked up my car, oh well.

Hellihooks - congrats on the gophers, herping is definitely a lot of where/when ya know.

Josh,

Nice meeting you at TR, nice shots, and a nice assortment of CA kingsnakes among other things.

That big guy was practically black when I caught him... Western swifts are way under-appreciated .... many have astounding color... :D
The reason I nabbed him was to get a better look at his pattern... many of the swifts I was seeing seemed to have the dlb row of triangles down the back, suggesting intergradation with Sceloporus occidentalis biseriatus which occur on the other side of the Mts we were surveying.
Anyone get any pics of swifts showing that characteristic? jim

More like this...

Banding across the back, SOMETIMES triangular. Maybe I was looking too hard for something that wasn't there/ talking myself into it...
But some of the swifts made me think San Joaquin Fence Lizard... and I generally trust my hunches... so I think there was some San Joaquin influence/intergradation going on... :D jim

Looks as much like one of the sceloporus orcuttis' we have around here as a fence lizard.

Here's the only good pic we have that shows the back:

Not sure I see any triangles or bands, though.
