Some recent snakes and things

Post by Steve Atkins »

Here's what we've been finding lately

Image

I know they are common some places, but these were my first redbelly snakes, what a cool little snake. And once we found one, we found 20 pretty quickly, and they were all pretty different color and pattern wise

first smooth greens also, same area as the redbellies, we found 8 or so

I liked the picture of the Nerodia. Good angle, and it is not just a brown blurr slipping off of a log.

My son had named that water snake "Big Bertha." She lives in a small pond close to town, so we are passing it all the time. Everytime we pass he asks if we can stop and look for Big Bertha and her babies (I told him she looks like she may be pregnant). Of course I always say yes, we can not usually get anywhere near her, but she must have been snoozing that day, I was actually able to set up a tri pod.

Were those smooth greens from our area? I thought they didn't go much more south than Virginia.

I agree with Josh, the stream-side timber picture is really cool.

I thought it was going to swim across, but it just curled up next to the creek. I would have enjoyed seeing a big fat rattler swimming

Do you mind if I ask what state you were in, particularly for the smooth green?

Everything was in either NC or Virginia. The Smooth Greens were in Virginia

Great post Steve. I really enjoy how you involve your children. Mine are all grown, so your post brings back some great memories with them.

A word of caution, millipedes secrete a fluid that can be irritating to some people especially if it gets in the eyes. Thought you’d like to know this.

Yikes! Good to know, thanks. My son loves making millipede mustaches, unibrows, etc.

Are we safe with snails? :)

You couldn't pay me to put a snail on my nose. I love herping with kids! Great post, and way to start it off with a killer timber shot!
