Wild caught albinos???

Wild caught albinos???
I'd really like to see some pictures of some albino herps (or other freaks) from the wild.
If anyone has any to contribute, let's see em!

Re: Wild caught albinos???
Here's a little somethin' I found last year in Az. Photo is with a wild type animal from the same locale for contrast.
Re: Wild caught albinos???
JL is the king of "freaks", but here's one from back in October of 2003 he didn't find
Re: Wild caught albinos???
Here's an amelanistic Gulf Coast Toad I found in my yard while mowing the lawn a couple years ago. Only mutant I've ever found in over 40 years of herping.
Re: Wild caught albinos???
Here is my freak uta from last year. I have no idea what you would call this aberration outside of "unbelievably ugly". Looks like a burn victim or something. It gives him a lot of character though.

Nice! Those are all awesome.
I'm curious what that racer would look like as it matures. Very cool.

Re: Wild caught albinos???
is that Uta scaleless or something? Funky.
Re: Wild caught albinos???
Huh. I hadn't considered that before, but its pattern is strangely reminiscent of the scaleless reptiles I've seen in pet stores. And when I zoom in on it, it definitely looks like patches of scales are missing from its limbs and possibly its entire torso. How interesting....strange what you fail to notice when you never even consider it.Paul White wrote:is that Uta scaleless or something? Funky.

It look scaleless. And to me, I don't think it's ugly.
Interesting find Jonathan.

Re: Wild caught albinos???
Hi Guys, I am new here but a friend of mine turned me onto this thread. I've done a lot of herping and have found a flame and a hypo eastern garter snake, but tonight in our very own backyard, my mom found a Paradox T positive albino eastern milk snake. It's a little female, a hatchling only days old. It is simply stunning, beautiful... I'll post photos of her in a little bit.

Here is an amelanistic Pacific gopher snake I found back in 1987. I know of 3 that were found in this region including mine.

in situ albino tantilla coronata found on my property and released.
Re: Wild caught albinos???
It's not albino, it's hypomelanistic. A male Sand lizard, Lacerta agilis:
A individual I had in terrarium with permission from the Danish Nature Conservation a few years ago.
(sorry about the quality)
Better pictures of hypomelanistic sand lizards can be seen at these websites:

Sweet!
How big was it? I'm fascinated by how many of these things seem to have managed to survive to a decent age.

Re: Wild caught albinos???
I wouldn't be surprised if venom helps in regards to that. And in some cases very secreative habits (ringneck, milk) Although rattlers seem to be more willing to rely on cryptic coloration than many snakes I see. A bullsnake or coachwhip will take off as soon as they think you've seen 'em but rattlers just seem to stay still unless you get *way* too close.

Here is a mostly patternless Great Basin gopher road pizza special.
Beautiful isn't it? I thought the composition and quality of photography on this one were top notch. I was going to do a Grismer-like shot, but every time I approached the appropriate angle the snake disappeared.

jonathan -- my pic of the amelanistic Pacific gopher was taken many years after her capture. She was a YOY when I found her as were the other 2 found in that area. Being diurnal to crepuscular with high surface activity, I doubt an amel gopher has much chance of reaching maturity.

Re: Wild caught albinos???
I caught this patternless San Diego Gopher in 2007.
He has since sired dozens of babies. The only abberant baby is the one pictured below.
I am currently incubating eggs from breeding the original patternless to his daughters...
Hopefully the trait will officially prove out this summer!

I really love this thread
Re: Wild caught albinos???
Heres a couple of adult Florida softshells Apalone ferox . Both were found and brought to me by a local trapper near Ft Myers Fla. The girl was a nice big 25 pounder, the male was in the 8 pound range. Both of these Incredible animals were in mint condition.

Re: Wild caught albinos???
I think a few of these "albinos" are leucistic, I dont see pink eyes on them...
Re: Wild caught albinos???
Here's a new one from last night! Too bad it was DOR:
It was much more apparent in person than it is in the pictures, but I think this is an anerythristic shovelnose snake. It was brown where it should have been red and had no yellow at all.

Re: Wild caught albinos???
Jonathan, that very well could be anery. There was one posted a few years ago next to a normal and the comparison was pretty convincing it was anery.

Here's some pics of some long-time captive annulata.
Re: Wild caught albinos???
Those are just normal color variations of Chios. Last night I saw a black and white one and a yellow and black one. I see 6 or 7 different color varieties in Borrego alone.

Jeff,
Below are several photos of Chionactis I found last year. I've driven this road in Imperial Co. for the last 15 years, have seen hundreds of Chios, but have only ever seen one like this 'anery' morph. I think it's a true anery...but let me know what you think.
And a close-up
Mitch

Re: Wild caught albinos???
My pics weren't a tenth as good, but Mitch's looks exactly like mine did, whatever it is. And mine's a Mojave btw - someone emailed me and thought it was another A-B find.
Re: Wild caught albinos???
Yeah, you don't see as many Mohaves that look like that, but I see b+w ones in Borrego almost every night

Black eyed amel? Hmm... I've found amel California Slender Salamanders before. red/pink eyes. One time I found 3 under the same rock!Jake Seals wrote:Here is an amelanistic spotted sal from this spring.
Awesome amel ringneck. That's the first one I've ever seen. Great find!
Oh, and about the Chios. The black and white form is more common than you think, in some areas. They aren't truly anery. Some have a few flecks of normal orange color. The ones lacking red are just a polygenic trait in some populations. They aren't true anerys in most cases. I've even seen them brown and yellow.
Re: Wild caught albinos???
Albino Vipera berus 2010
Locality: South Sweden
A lady took this pic with her cell and contacted Swedish herp society wondering what species the pinkish/orange snake was. Indeed a true find, I´ve asked around and none have ever seen anything like it documented before.

Love the ringnecks. I've never seen an albino. How did that rattler survive?

I missed this thread its first time around, glad it was bumped.

Weird eastern garter found here in Quebec in 2006. Some sort of albino....
