That might not sound too great, huh? The hottest month of the year in a seemingly boring agricultural Midwestern state? Well, despite this, August turned out to be one of my most productive months of the year yet.
I tried spotlighting for rough greens at night for the first time and have had some success.

Nick Scobel came down and I had the privilege of herping with them. Our main goal was vipers, but first, we turned up this decent looking milk snake.

Our goal was achieved, with a total of five copperheads.

I got a call from a friend about a snake, and was happy to see this hatchling racer.

Over Labor Day weekend, I went searching for Timber Rattlesnakes.A friend was kind enough to show me a log where he had seen a female a few times before. When we got there, we were fortunate enough to see her with her young.

I've heard about spotlighting rough greens. Have yet to try it. Glad to hear it worked for you. Looks like a great August.

Thanks guys!
Re: August In Indiana
My grandsons & I viewed your post this morning, and his excitement in seeing Herps which are not common locally (NW Indiana)- but are present in other areas of the state- was a joy to see! I was going to say I envy you your geo-locale.....but then realized how much time and energy you must have put into locating/photographing these beautiful animals, and realized that locational good fortune plays but a minor part in the process!
Thank you for sharing the photos.....and the experience....with us!

Timbers in Indiana is pretty cool. What they told me in my classed when I was at Purdue (~2006) was that there are only a few spots left in the state where they can be found, and even then it isn't a sure bet. Hopefully more keep showing up in the state.
