She fought off 140 rattlers with a no hunting sign! Love it.

Wow, those arms look about as leathery as the skins. Slaughterback was her last name, appropriate.

Kate gained national fame on October 28, 1925, by shooting and clobbering 140 rattlesnakes to death in two hours.
That says it all.

Indeed.

I don't believe for a second the story went down the way she claims it went down. I think she just went and killed a shit load of snakes and made up an absurd story to go along with it.

Kate had ridden to a pond with her 3 year old son, Ernie, to gather any wounded ducks from hunters. She had to climb down from her horse to unlock the gate. That is when the first snake appeared.

So she saves ducks, but kills 140 rattlesnakes? Yeah that makes perfect sense.

No doubt each of the snakes in the bushes had just rolled down a hill, tail in mouth......

I love the stories people are inclined to tell when they've killed a reptile (or in this case, 140 reptiles), to justify their actions. Clearly 'self defense' sounds better than 'I just felt like killing something that day'.

A while ago I had an online conversation with another reptile keeper, admittedly not the brightest of sparks, who told me about the time his grandfather had to kill a rattlesnake because it wouldn't let him get out of his car. Supposedly, he was forced to resort to rolling down a window and dispatching the snake with a shotgun. When I said "Mate, he was in a car. He could have gone out a door on the other side, or driven forward two metres and then got out. He just wanted to kill a snake and made up a story" the guy logged off in a huff.

Ha ha ha ha, I am sure she probably would have fought off the second wave of rattlesnakes had they come out of hiding after watching the terrible massacre. Silly stories, silly people, and silly dress.

So if you want to find a rattle snake just make a lot of noise and a bunch will come out of the forest to attack you. Awesome I’m gana try it and I bet I will find 150 rattlesnakes. Haha what a great story I cant imagine the horror she experienced.
