Took some quick photos of an interesting elegans I found the other day.
Anyone ever run across the gray head like that?

That thing is weird.
I found this one last year. Not as cool as yours, imo. The head on yours looks almost blue.

Thamnophis elegans is such a variable species. I wonder if anyone is tackling a phylogeny?

Here is a melanistic elegans from Nevada:

Bryan, that's the most interesting elegans I've ever seen.

Rob, I saw one like that a couple of summers ago, above 10,000 ft. I got some so so pics, I'll have to dig them up. Certainly an unusual animal.

There is a population of black-headed wandering garters in the Albuquerque area. I've seen multiple individuals with jet black heads.

A few days ago I collected one from a xeric site that was nearly solid black on the venter. Normally I find them with a plain buffy belly, sometimes lightly speckled with black and occasionally a vivid blue. Indeed a highly variable snake. Never seen very much variation on the head like that though. That's a neat find.

I never knew all these forms existed. Nice finds everyone.

Rich, that female would look pie bald if those blotches were pure white, some are though, it looks like. I don't know whats going on there but it looks a little too different to just be variation, but I don't know. Maybe calico would be a good name.
