I agree that Reptilist's animal has a tail which appears to be too short for C. bilineatus. But it also has a tail which appears too short to be C.c.flaviventris. I'm guessing that's because it's missing. I will admit that I could be wrong (Given some of the names of those who disagree with me, I would be foolish not to) But of all the other possibilities mentioned, C. bilineatus is the only one that doesn't require either an aberration of color/pattern, a range extension, a time machine, the handiwork of a mad scientist, or (in the case of some suggestions) a "chupa cobra" to make it's case. All C. bilineatus needs is the tip of his tail glued back on to his dead body. That's all I'm saying. ;)

Now that its been mentioned, the end of that tail does look like its missing. Looks like a Racer to me.

Did I have a prior encounter with an Arizona Racer?

Yes, I am certain that I saw a live one in this area myself, but I was too slow to catch it before it disappeared into the grass and rocks. I am convinced that there are relict populations here. I have been "fishing" for info over the years in the form of anecdotal sightings of greenish, patternless snakes seen by locals. Mostly they approach me with a description and an identity query...I believe some of them have seen what I am seeking.

This photo is the best evidence I've had yet... But I am absolutely holding back my excitement until I get a verified location from the guy who sent me the pic.
I am hopeful it was taken along the road we both share.... That is the tone I got from his short note. But, who knows, maybe he went over to NM that day?
I expect to hear back from him after the holidays. My fingers are crossed.

I hope to discover at least one population of Arizona's rarest snake. Maybe I'll name it Coluber constrictor reptilisticus hahha

Terry, it appears to be Coluber constrictor to me. But of course as others have mentioned we can't say for certain due to the quality of the image. Couple of observations though. Even though it was found on a roadway, it does not appear to have been killed by a motor vehicle. That wound looks more like maybe someone saw it on the roadway and took a hoe or shovel and chopped it. As for the tail being too short for Coluber, yes it does look short, but to me it appears that the end of the tail is actually missing....perhaps chopped off.

I'd LOVE to be able to validate this as a racer, or even to ignore it all together since I just now heard back from the person who sent me the pics. But I have a responsibility to you all, and a reputation to preserve, so...

He just wrote me back with a location:
The Malumbu road in Fungurume, I'm back in Congo.
Dammit!

Still, I suppose that's one heck of a range extention for a yellow bellied racer, right?

The Malumbu road in Fungurume, I'm back in Congo.
In that case, it could not possibly be a sonora, thamnophis, salvadora, or masticophis. Therefore, it MUST be coluber.

On a more serious note, since all the suspects, locations and weapons have changed...

I'm guessing Sir Henry Morton Stanley, on the mine road, with a pith helmet.
