Arc GIS Software for older Mac
Does anyone happen to know of a good resource of downloadable Arc GIS software for a MAC running OS 10.4.11? I also have a laptop running on 10.5.8 (Snow Leopard) so one suitable for that would also be useful. Low or no cost preferably. Thanks.

You can get DIVA-GIS to work on a Mac, though not sure about your particular OS...check out the website. Oh, and it's free...

Thank you, Gabriel for the lead, but unfortunately my Macs doe not operate on Intel chips which is what's required for DIVA. I'll have to keep looking...

Unfortunately, as it seems you are aware, Arc software isn't going to run on a mac unless you have an intel chip and can dual boot to windows. Depending on what your needs for the software are and if you have a smartphone, you may find that Arc Mobile is sufficient. I do not believe it allows you to run any sort of analysis but does let you view and edit shapefiles, edit attribute tables, and to input new coordinates into shape files while in the field. I believes its capabilities are similar to that of Arc Pad

You might check out Quantum GIS (http://www.qgis.org). It's not an ESRI program (like ArcGIS), but it's free, and, so long as you include the Grass GIS plugins, it's very powerful, and has a very broad functionality. The most recent version may not be available for a 10.4, but I'm almost certain I've gotten an older version running on a Mac 10.4 before, so I'm pretty sure you can get it running on your older machine. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you've got any questions; I'm not exactly a GIS expert, but I've been using quantum for a few years now, so I know it relatively well.
What are you trying to use ArcGIS for, by the way? There may be other software out there that could also do it if you can't get quantum or DIVA running.

I suggest trying QGIS as well. A private license for ArcGIS is > $1000.
Might also check out this new site the feds just launched.

If you choose QGIS, I would also suggest to set up a PostGIS database instead of working with shapefiles and other files. It's really worth it to have all the data stored in a well designed spatial database.
